This isn't anything about i-dle specifically, just using this as a place to muse...

It's been interesting to watch the industry settle into a new equilibrium. 2025 sold ~10 million albums fewer than 2024, which sold ~20 million albums fewer than 2023. Album sales are down for a lot of groups (e.g. IVE's Revive sold less than Ive Secret, which sold less than Ive Empathy; NMIXX's Heavy Serenade is down from Blue Valentine, which was also down from Fe3O4: Forward, etc.)

So basically to say... anything that is not a plummet off a cliff is still very good for a group, because it's not really clear at this point where the industry is going to settle for sales. And tbh, I wouldn't mind if the music industry as a whole pivoted away from the bulk buying/landfillcore.

obviously bigger groups will still be fine but the question is who the drastic reduction affects mid tier and smaller groups

obviously I don't have numbers but 100K for a GG is (was) considered good and mid tier groups couldn't even hit that and therefore if those group sales are falling by a similar amount to the bigger groups then their finances are in danger

Yeah, it's really going to be down to if the company they're under is competent at managing their money. If they started assuming that every release would be a million seller, despite it being an industry-wide temporary boon, and spending like that, they could be in real trouble.

I've been thinking about that with the whole ONE HUNDRED company scandal too. They had Baekhyun with two million+ seller albums, Taemin's album that sold 170K copies, Viviz who consistently sold 60-80K albums, The Boyz who was selling 500K+ per album, and multiple smaller artists who reliably sold ~5-10K a piece. There is no reason that a competent CFO couldn't look at the consistent sales of their smaller acts to budget according to their fanbases and take the boons from their big acts to keep a profitable machine going. And yet...

Yeah, it's really going to be down to if the company they're under is competent at managing their money. If they started assuming that every release would be a million seller, despite it being an industry-wide temporary boon, and spending like that, they could be in real trouble.
