Have you ever done a "Project Pan" (or variant)? (2 Viewers)

I came across this idea on reddit, but I'm sure it originates elsewhere.

The basic premise is from the makeup community, where people commit to "hitting the pan" or using the makeup until the shiny pan of the container is visible. It's been adopted by other communities, like Project Polish is aiming to use up your nail polish. Project Pantry is aiming to use up canned goods, frozen items, bags of flour, etc. Craft Destash is making crafts with only craft supplies you already own, etc.

Basically, a commitment to look at something that you own a lot of, and making a concentrated effort to only use what you already own until you "hit the pan" (use it all up) before buying more.

July has been a very expensive month for me, so I thought the idea was nice and a way to dial back and be more conscious of my spending.

I currently have 23 colors of nail polish + two toppers, and I have a lot of yarn and plenty of patterns (plus a need to make 100 baby birds anyway), so I thought I would focus on using up those supply categories for the rest of the year without purchasing more. I also just want to be more mindful in general of purchasing only food that I'm sure I'm going to eat.

It's a real pain to be paying my credit card bill and going "I'm sorry, I spent how much on what exactly????"

I though that was the default Though to be fair, I don’t do anything in terms of makeup and not a lot in terms of crafts, so maybe those are harder to use up what you’d have instead of something like food

Some people are real hoarders of single category items (like my shelf of yarn and 25 nail polishes is literally nothing). I have a friend who is a massive prepper and his entire basement looks like a warehouse for a grocery store.

I try to unfollow or mute things like reddit communities that celebrate landfillcore. Like I saw on the Bath & Bodyworks reddit the other day, someone sharing their collection of perfumes and they have, like, 50 different scents with 3 bottles of each, and I'm like... In what universe could you realistically use all of that?? But the comments were acting like she barely had anything.

Insanity right?? And I was checking the nail polish community I'm part of this morning (they do a monthly bingo to encourage people to use their polishes) and came across a post where someone said they think they have approximately 5,000 polishes.

Like, even if they changed their polish on their hands and toes every single day, it would take them 7 YEARS to use all of them once. It's estimated that it takes about 30 manicures to use up a single bottle of nail polish... They will die before they use up their collection. And that what I mean about some of these collection hobbies feeling very landfillcore.

There’s probably just as much variance within brands that across, just from batch differences

I'm going to a convention later this year, but I'm going by myself. So I signed up for a fan trinket exchange to help me make connections and make the con more fun. I'm crocheting baby birds as the trinket other people can get from me.

jokes aside - how long does it take to make one of them since it must take a long time to make 100? can you do it whilst doing something else like watching tv or something or does it need dedicated concentration?

Roughly one an hour, if I'm doing something else. I want them all to feel unique, so there is that added time with trying to add nice details to each.

Luckily, I've made enough now that I can crochet while doing other things. I often bring it to my weekend D&D night, since we play for a long time and it's a big table, so lots of time when the spotlight isn't on my character.

I set a goal to do 20 a month so I'll finish just in time for the convention. And that way it's more spread out and I can still do other hobbies, etc. I'm currently at 24 done.

so is it like cooking in that the difficult is coming up with different and like you said unique spins to each of them - the thinking and designing part that the actual crocheting part (once you have the design and whatnot) is actually not tht much work?
