When the Titanic sank in 1912, the Carpathia was the ship that picked up the survivors. The Carpathia was about 48 nautical miles (used to be thought 58 nautical miles) from the Titanic when the Carpathia turned towards it. The maximum rated speed of the Carpathia was 14 knots. However, the crew of the Carpathia took measures to increase its speed past that, such as shutting off heating and hot water to redirect that steam to the engines. While there are no definite numbers for the speed the Carpathia reached (17.5 knots is often cited, but that uses the incorrect distance of 58 nautical miles), given the distance, time it takes to increase the speed, etc, it’s realistic to assume that the top speed the Carpathia reached was likely 15-16 knots. This would put the speed over the given maximum speed of 14 knots.
