Urobuchi Gen, also known as Butcher Gen
, is my favorite screenwriter and original creator for anime series. When you think what makes a good anime, story and characters are often first things in mind and that's what screenwriters do- they write the script for the anime, but sadly they often go unnoticed. Looking for animes that i like, i have noticed that often the screenwriter is what connects some of my favorite animes instead of anime studio or director. Screenwriters are especially important for animes that are original and don't have source material- cause then all the story etc. comes from them (often in collaboration with director).
So back to Butcher Gen- or Urobutcher, you might wonder where he got his nickname
It's bit of play on his name ofc, but it comes from quite nihilistic and dark take he has to his stories where lot of his characters often end up dying. He writes multiple genres, but most of his works are for adult audiences ofc, and he does lot of dark fantasy, thriller and horror type of work. Some of his most known works include Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass & Aldnoah Zero. He worked as original creator for all of them and varying levels on script, but mostly in charge of it.
Shortly what i like from his writing and stories; coherent and clever script that doesn't show everything at once, but gradually reveals more of the story and characters, dark but deep and makes me think about the themes introduced, multidimensional and grey characters especially girls, no fanservice, no tropes, just good original story with clever misdirections and details that tie everything together.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Madoka Magica is one of most known stories from Butcher Gen, but his involvement with it is actually kinda funny story. Cause before Madoka Magica Butcher Gen had already gotten bit of reputation as someone who, well, butchers his characters and writes dark stories. But the anime studio SHAFT didn't want this his reputation to affect how the anime was seen since the start and rather wanted to suprise the audiences with so they put up trailers who were insisting Madoka Magica would be quite sweet and regular magical girl anime. They actually hid Gen Urobuchi's name first, but it was leaked and then Butcher Gen made following comments to mislead the audience further: "It's time to recognize me as a healing-type writer." "It's disappointing that my new anime is called 'Chidamari (blood puddle) Sketch'.", "I want to make the audience happy by the anime." These ofc were lies and just made to keep audience unaware the true nature of the show.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica ended up being highly succesful and Gen Urobuchi was recognized for his effort in Japan with Best Screenplay and NewType Anime awards in 2011.
I don't quite want to spoil new watchers any further, cause well that kinda ruins the surprise of good magical girl anime turning into dark fantasy anyways, but i think most new watchers of Madoka are already spoiled by that. But just putting my thoughts on it: Madoka Magica is my favorite anime and one thing i loved about it is how coherent the script is, it's mystery that keeps solving itself piece by piece, but everything in it makes sense when it's revealed. It's really clever to me, the characters and their actions make sense even if you don't agree with them, everyone is multidimensional, and i guess there is that freshness that isn't tied to tropes. And one thing i like how it doesn't have fanservice either nor fanservice tropes, it feels honest story through. This to me is also shown in Butcher Gen's other works as well, they are dark, but they are also deep, coherent, have multidimensional characters and lot of thought behind their actions.
Fate/Zero
Fate / Zero is part of Fate franchise that is quite massive, it started from visual novel games, but then spread to anime, manga and other platforms. Fate / Zero itself is most praised and highly rated anime of the franchise and for many including myself it's starting point to the franchise that can't be beaten. Although Fate / Zero came after Fate / Stay Night (both anime and visual novel), it's actually prologue to it. And those that aren't familiar with Fate, but have been nice enough to read to this point- Fate's story is about Holy Grail war where mages summon historical and mythological heroic servants (including King Arthur, Jean de Arc, Achilles, Alexander the Great..) to battle each other to win wish-granting holy grail. And it gets pretty murderous.
Fate / Zero started as light novel that Urobuchi wrote as part of franchise, then turned into manga also written by him and then finally turned into anime that was made by Ufotable and Urobuchi worked as original creator and supervising the script. He also won NewType of Anime award for Fate / Zero.
In terms of story-telling Fate / Zero has many similar points to Madoka Magica including multidimensional characters that have more of grey morality overall and although you don't quite agree what they are doing you can understand why they are doing it, well mostly (there is some crazies in the mix). Difference would be that Fate / Zero included lot more violence and gore, it has similar dark fantasy and psychological-thriller elements as Madoka Magica, but it's age rating is higher and so are things happening in screen, things tend to get bit fucked up with this one and can be hard to stomach at times
Sadly i have no interesting story to tell about Butcher Gen writing Fate / Zero, but i'm sure he had lot of fun with this one
Fate / Zero is also one of my favorite animes, it handles it's gigantic cast well and it gets really intense. Story ofc is good, but so is Ufotable's animation, it's just top notch anime for those looking sth bit darker, but mature.
Psycho Pass
Psycho Pass is another amazing series from Gen Urobuchi.. and another pretty dark and mature one, being scifi-thriller about future police catching serial killers and living in society where big brother is always watching
. Gen Urobuchi made concept of the story for all seasons and movie, wrote script for first season and movie (that won another NewType Anime award cause why not), and supervised season 2.
Psycho Pass to me is even darker take than Butcher Gen's, i definitely couldn't watch lot of eps at one setting cause sometimes i felt bit sick at some scenes. Lot of gore, but also psychological horror and torture. It's not untasteful to me, but it was a lot. Overall i think the series is quite good sociel commentary and giving bit of warning on one possible future of humanity, what can happen if algorithms and computers are given power to decide, if people are always being watched and their worth is being measured by algorithms (cough China cough).. Maybe the possible realism of it makes it even harder to take at times, not that every serial killers feels like that, but just the word around.
Also i want to give props to Gen for making Akane Tsunemori, it's quite unseen to have female main character who isn't sexualised, who isn't automaticall super good but rather gradually gets more assertive and confident in their skills while they develop, and who is pretty feminine and even petite, but still tries to kicks ass as much she cans. Like keeping the character clearly as woman, but without sexualising them and using them as fanservice, just giving them lot of development, character, femininity, but also skill and drive.
-- Thanks for reading for everyone that got to this point, even if you just skimmed it through
And damn that was lot of writing i need rest
