On cultural appropriation (2 Viewers)

I have been watching a few videos that board this topic of cultural appropriation. It has been my impression that the vast majority of the offended people are those who are foreign to the supposedly appropriated culture. It got me thinking about a little thing I have on my little Caribbean home. I own a set of this:

Yep. A set of Korean chopsticks and spoon, very much like those I have seen dozens of times on Youtube videos. I managed to learn how to use them and I actually use them whenever I can. Now I'd like to ask the Koreans on this forum how do they feel about this. Do you think I'm doing cultural appropriation?

Ironic this fake thing called cultural appropriation yet what your mom said was technically racist. Trust me Koreans don't care. it's a fake crazy American thing that was created because we forgot about cultural exchange and it's benifits.

The weird thing about cultural appropriation is no one argues about food so you'd probably be fine. It's mostly to do with appearance like bindis although what's funny with those "woke" people is there's more than 1 type of bindi so they're just proving themselves to be ignorant.

Yea definitely the one's who are offended are usually not part of the culture they are offended for. For example Japanese people usually appreciate when people are inspired by their culture, they don't mind even cringy things like Avril Lavigne's Hello Kitty. So although foreigners would be called out for things like trying out Kimono or being inspired by japanese fashion, the japanese would mostly be surprised or flattered that someone is that into their culture.

I think as long as you aren't mocking anyone or you aren't misusing religious stuff and cultural stuff it shouldn't be a problem. And eating food with korean silverware certainly shouldn't offend anyone.

Reminds me of a funny exchange I saw where a someone triggered by someone wearing a kimino encountered a Japanese person who didn't care and ended up arguing with them

I think there is one thing with some stuff in other cultures though which is that if what you want has to be earned in that culture like the war bonnet

Yea, i don't think lot of cultural items have such deep respect and significance that someone simply wearing them would be considered mocking.

There is actually one korean commercial that is older now, but uses Finnish culture.. well kinda, but completely wrongly and cringily. I don't think it's necessary offensive to Finnish people, but nth about it is right either So I would rather that they researched the topic bit more before. In other hand i guess many commercials are supposed to be cringy.

Yeah the ones that are actually limited to a very specific group of people are definitely a small group and that ad offends me for how absolutely terrible it is

I don't think cultural appropriation should even be a thing, unless it gets too awkward. Even then people can do whatever they want, it's okay to me as long as it's not illegal or disrespectful.

I don't think you need to be Korean to have those. I personally got them as a gift. I wanted them in order to learn how to use them for when I visit a Korean restaurant and for the time I could be able to go to Korea. I thought it would be nice and respectful to eat Korean food with Korean chopsticks. Now that I use them, I find them advantageous to use over forks in some situations.

This video motivated me to make this thread. It seems that Japanese people actually appreciate when foreigners get interested in their culture.

Ya'all not from a Westren country need to stop wearing Western clothes cause that's cultural appropriation. And I want a appology for appropriating Western medicine. While your at it start using vegetables and fruits native to your country. Don't you dare eat ours.


Sounds stupid right? That's cause it is stupid. IT's not cultural appropriation it's cultural exchange. Cultural appropriation is self segregation and a heaping dose of denial of history.

@blueberries I have a beautiful hand sewn kimono that two older Japanese ladies helped me pick out. They even suggested some men's wooden sandals to go with it (my feet are huge). Really we gone from cultural exchange to survive, to cultural exchange to keep traditions alive
