In the past, the areas had a large penguin population, with 5 different species making their home on the island. Due to human activity, the number dropped dramatically. However, this changed due to the tensions between Britan and Argentina. The Falkland Islands now have vast areas covered in landmines. This provides a danger to many animal species, however, it actually provides a safe haven for the penguins who are to light to set off the mines. Because of this, penguin numbers have dramatically increased, and now all 5 species of penguins originally found in the area can be found there, with the area having 20% of the total Gentoo penguins in the world.

The Holocene or also known as the Anthropocene extinction is the sixth mass extinction event in the planets history. The cause being humans and/or human activity. Both are two differnt names but refer to the same event spanning about 11000 years to current.
