I've noticed that larger kpop groups with more members tend to lip sync more than smaller groups with fewer members. this has always been confusing because wouldn't it be easier to sing in a larger group because you don't have as many lines? they also tend to perform worse in the vocal department when they do sing live. i know that every group lip syncs no matter the size of the group but itsalways been kinda confusing to me.

Bcs it is easier to find 5 members who can sing reasonably well live, than it is to find 13.
If 5 of 7 members can sing live reasonably well, then they can give the 2 little lines and sing live.
If 5 of 13 members can sing live reasonably well, then that is 8 members who can't sing live and that is a significant portion of the song.

Sometimes it's just a hassle on venue staff to accommodate so many people. It's easier to just give the heavy lifters mics and let the rest focus on dancing
And to be frank larger groups tend to have more dancers/visuals than vocals. They're either there to be popular or boost member count so there isn't a whole lot of emphasis on them being able to carry the two lines they have

its sometimes very hard to tell because music shows and kpop companies put heavy back tracks or theyll pre record vocals. I have a whole thread dedicated to showing the difference between a live performance and a pre recorded one.

true but still, even the vocal line in larger groups have a harder time keeping up when singing live. I think kpop companies need to just focus more on stamina as well as being able to improve their trainees' vocals. both are important, you could be an amazing singer but sound terrible when dancing because you dont have enough stamina.

Because it's very difficult to pick a lot of members who are on the same level when it comes to vocals AND fit the concept AND fit together than to put 5. Smaller groups also tend to "specialize" in one type. We know that idols sometimes get debuted and still get practices to become better (they choose trainees who have potential to grow over trainees who have reached their end potential).
Also, a lot of venues don't have that much mics available that actually work. That's what SJ had. They were the first big group and people weren't prepared for that.
That being said, I noticed that a lot of good vocalists come from 5+ membered groups (like Kyuhyun, who is generally viewed the best vocalist in the idol industry)

that's true, there are definitely more filler groups in larger groups that don't really enhance vocals. but I feel like now, music shows are way more used to larger groups then they were when groups with that many members first came on the scene. so they're usually prepared for it now but I could get why it may be easier to just slap a pre-recording instead of having to mic up every single member.

I'm just saying what I've noticed when looking at different performances, I know that there are larger groups who can sing live, probably better than smaller groups. and yeah there are smaller groups who can struggle that's definitely true but I'm just reporting what I've noticed in general.

I would guess with the big groups that suck at singing live... the problem is that they aren't used to it, because they don't do it often. With that even the good singers would not be used to singing live.

true, that's why focusing on stamina is equally as important as focusing on vocals.

but seriously. larger groups tend to bot have enough mics for the amount of members there is on music shows. that‘s one reason why something like that is there.
