So this containts quite mature and nsfw topics about sexual depiction as well as sexual violence which is why there is 18+.

Australian Senator wants all anime to be reviewed in Australia for exploitation of children. In his speech on Australian parliament he said that lot of anime portrays underaged characters in sexual ways and even includes sexual violence like rape. He called out lot of popular anime on this including Eromanga Sensei, No Game No Life, Goblin Slayer and Sword Art Online.

Now anime portraying underage characters sexually has been hot topic before and there has been debate if this should lead to some kind of restrictions or bans, but usually the end result is that these are drawings and not real people. I think it's not bad topic to discuss, especially if we are thinking of age rating of animes and such- usually animations tend to get quite low rating since they are always seen as for kids even if they aren't meant for kids at all. And lot of anime has some effed up stuff, that maybe should be restricted more, I don't know.

But I have big issue with how this Australian Senator went on about it, since he actually if not outright lied, at least intentionally mispresented some of the shows. I can't talk for all the shows, but at least Goblin Slayer and SAO.

His speech of Goblin Slayer goes completely over my head. It's mature and violent anime that portrays horrific stuff, sure I agree with that. But most of all it portrays rape as evil and traumatic thing. Secondly we don't know if the character who was the victim is underage or not, her age is not known.

Secondly he talks about SAO's first season villain that sexually assaults one of the characters, but he talks like it was portrayed like it was good thing. But like.. this character is villain. He is portrayed as disgusting man and his actions are portrayed as horrible.

Now ofc we can talk about if it's ok to use sexual violence as plotdevice or is it being used too much in fiction, which I'd say yes, but it's not like all media doesn't include sexual violence from films to tv shows to books. So why single out anime in particular?

If he said that anime- or animation in general- needs to be reviewed again since lot of it has mature content and ratings don't always show that I'd agree wholeheartedly. But I feel like he's trying to portray anime as some evil thing while cherry picking stuff and also almost lying about the content that these animes have.

I think he's half australian half japanese, he really might do one. Chibi reviews already did make video on it. And i think mosto f anime community thinks it's bit stupid cause he's nitpicking.

Also I fail to see how any of this is worse than portraying disturbing/fucked up stuff in live action shows. It's not like they're airing Boku no Pico on TV over there, and none of the instances he mentioned have shown these incidents in a good light or glorified the perpetrator. It is pretty clear the viewer is supposed to detest these actions as they happen on screen.

As long as all shows come with a proper rating and children don't get exposed to shows with such themes before they need to, I don't see a problem.

But yeah seeing as he's been around both cultures he'll probably have a well thought out stance about this, and the only anime I watched off this list was SAO so I can't really say if he was right or wrong about the other animes. We definitely didn't see any rape in SAO tho I mean at least not in the anime, it was just threatened, we did see sexual assault tho but he is making it out to be more dramatic than it was and made out that it was shown positively >.>

Yea I don't rly see either how it's more disturbing than other medias. Tons of mature tv shows have sexual violence and other disturbing themes. At most for Goblin Slayer and SAO you could argue that they could be higher rated, but not that they should be banned. Goblin Slayer is apparently rated MA+15 in Australia, when in UK for example it's 18+ so if they want they could rise that rating. At most the senator could be asking for rating system to take violence and sexual themes in animation more seriously.

In other hand Australia is known to have strict rating system already and they have banned games and stuff most of other countries don't have issues with. I think they have been targeting video games before with bans so maybe it's animes turn now..

He didn't even point out that controversial animes, like especially No Game No Life and SAO are seen by lot of teenagers too, they aren't considered that edgy or weird within anime fandom.
