What do you guys mean when you say ashy? At first I thought it was when a foundation was too light but then someone told me that it actually meant you looked dry, but I still see dark skinned youtubers saying ashy when they try new primers or powders that have light pigment in it, or when an eyeshadow has a white base pigment etc so now i'm just really confused. I watch MissDarcei and Kennie JD quite often and they say this a lot in their makeup videos so I just wanted to understand what they mean when they say it.

Usually foundations have grey undertones, green undertones etc

Ashy has to do with your skin being dry, and the effect it has is that of a gray ashy color, which is why it's called being ashy. dunno the exact chemical reason dry skin turns grey, but it's become a colloquial term for the color as well ig in skin products, which makes some sense.

Maybe it's bc with dry skin you have a thicker layer of dead skin cells and any colour from melanin or blood won't be present because it's all dead? Like when you get all the dead skin off your heels it usually comes off in this whitish dust.

I've only ever seen poc people use it, I hadn't even heard of the term before I heard Kennie JD say it

Yeah, so in terms of makeup it's shades that make us look washed out and not vibrant/glowing.

Example - ashy (left), not ashy (right)

In other terms, It just means you're dry and you need some lotion

Maybe dry skin shows up much clearer on darker skin, i've personally never noticed a greyish cast when i've had dry skin, nor has any makeup that dried out my skin given a grey cast either. Maybe some pale ppl do get this but we don't get it enough for us to have a term for it cuz it just isn't as noticable when you're already white af

Its a word that has been around a long time to describe Dry skin (mainly used by Poc's like way before I was born) to the point that it looks white and crumblely.
Basically when you lightly scratch your arm, flaky bits of skin come off like white marks appear this is because the skin is dry.
Anyone can be ashy but it's more apparent on darker tone skin colours.

I think the majority of really tan white people are tan because of tanning lotions so I wouldn't think they would have an opportunity to use it much either
