I Find Japanese Anime Fascinating

I just watched an episode of Beastars on a whim.

And it prompted me to write this.

I'm a relative newcomer to anime. Though I've started watching years ago. I can count on two hands the number of anime I've watched in full.

Though I watched Pokemon growing up, I count my official introduction to the Japanese Anime Proper as being when I watched Death Note in the original Japanese a few years ago. I loved the dark story and filed it away as a favorite.

But it wasn't until my brother @DrewB encouraged me to watch Berserk that I became enamoured with the medium. Berserk has stayed with me unlike any artistic endeavor I've experienced in a long while. There was something... Raw and beautiful about that story's combination of brutality and humanity, aspiration and adventure, triumph and tragedy.

Since then I've watched several.more anime series, most notably being Chobits, a far cry from Berserk that explored a lighter and more comedically romantic avenue.

What strikes me about Japanese anime is its embrace of the plethora of human experience and themes against its drawn medium.

Conditioned by the Western style animation I grew up with, that caters its stories and themes to a softer form of storytelling, often intended for family or youth audiences, Japanese anime explores the grotesque, the weird, the ugly, the outlandish. While still incorporating beauty, and cuteness and other themes often associated with "animation" in the Western world.

While I will forever be endeared to the Disney-esque animation of my youth (and present), Japanese anime offers a decidedly refreshing take on what animation can be, what it can explore, the reach it can arrive for.

I'm sure to those well versed in the anime world, I'm speaking to the choir in some respects. You may say..... "Bro....where you been?".

But to me..... It's like a whole Wonderful world I never knew existed suddenly opened my eyes to its presence.

Anyway....

This was my little essay in support of anime.

Onward to Beastars Episode 2.

It's basically about in a world full of people with quirks and heroes (quirks are superpowers) It follows the story of a quirkless boy's adventure to become the number one hero. It's really good I recommend it.
