I think many of us learned that there are 5 different senses, but many neurologist believe in at least 9 senses, including sense of temperature, pain, and body orientation. Thinking about it, it makes a lot more sense than 5, but I never even thought about it before.

Ye i remember being like... how is it only 5... and High School came and said but wait, there are not 5, not 9, there are... way too many to count cause our body does so much stuff we can't even count all of our senses.

I always knew them as 5 senses lol, and looked at anything else as just permutations/combinations of those 5 but idk anymore. Spatial awareness/body orientation is a good example of something I can't explain using the basic 5 senses lol.

I guess it's considered different, probably because they use different sensors in the body. I'm not an expert so I don't know the full details.

It's always been taught as 5 because Aristotle used 5 in his works, but that it a bit outdated, it's been over 1000 years. Also if you think about it, touch and temperature are pretty different. Touch is basically just sensing where an object is touching you, but temperature is felt throughout the whole body constantly and in relation to what your own personal temperature is, so it isn't as binary. It doesn't just include the temperature of what you're touching but every part of your body at all points in time.

In a way, but touch doesn't typically include non physical thing like air. Very few people would call touching air a a thing. It uses different sensors as well, and it's considered relative to a point rather than something like physical touch, which isn't relative to anything.
