Empaths are highly sensitive individuals, who have a keen ability to sense what people around them are thinking and feeling. Psychologists may use the term empath to describe a person that experiences a great deal of empathy, often to the point of taking on the pain of others at their own expense. However, the term empath can also be used as a spiritual term, describing an individual with special, psychic abilities to sense the emotions and energies of others. This particular article will focus on the psychological aspects of being an empath.

There are many benefits of being an empath. On the bright side, empaths tend to be excellent friends. They are superb listeners. They consistently show up for friends in times of need. They are big-hearted and generous. Empaths also tend to be highly intuitive and emotionally intelligent.

However, some of the very qualities that make empaths such fantastic friends can be hard on the empaths themselves. Because empaths quite literally feel what their friends are going through, they can become overwhelmed by painful emotions, such as anxiety or anger. Empaths have a tendency to take on the problems of others as their own. It is often difficult for them to set boundaries for themselves and say no, even when too much is being asked of them.

Additionally, it is common for empaths to feel drained after spending time around people. Empaths are usually introverts, and they require a certain amount of alone time in order to recharge. A study from 2011 suggests there may be a link between highly empathic individuals and social anxiety. Crowds can feel particularly overwhelming to empaths, who are often highly sensitive to certain noises and incessant chatter. They often feel their best when they are surrounded by nature.

Do you think that you are an empath?

I personally am 100% one. Only thing is that I am an extrovert who does need alone time too ( ENFP right here ya'll).
I for sure feel like my emotions are quite on the high a lot and the way others influence me can be difficult to handle. I just can't seem to set boundaries and can forget what is better for me and that I should let some things be handled by individuals on their own.

On the same page there also is this which can help you identify that:
Dr. Judith Orloff, author of The Empath’s Survival Guide, offers this short quiz to evaluate whether or not you are an empath:

Ask yourself:

  • Have I been labeled as “too emotional” or overly sensitive?
  • If a friend is distraught, do I start feeling it too?
  • Are my feelings easily hurt?
  • Am I emotionally drained by crowds, require time alone to revive?
  • Do my nerves get frayed by noise, smells, or excessive talk?
  • Do I prefer taking my own car places so that I can leave when I please?
  • Do I overeat to cope with emotional stress?
  • Am I afraid of becoming engulfed by intimate relationships?
According to Dr. Orloff, “If you answer ‘yes’ to 1-3 of these questions, you’re at least part empath. Responding ‘yes’ to more than 3 indicates that you’ve found your emotional type.”

“Recognizing that you’re an empath is the first step in taking charge of your emotions instead of constantly drowning in them,” Dr. Orloff says. Once you begin to understand your empathic nature, you can learn to take better care of yourself emotionally.

I would say yes to 7/8 of those tbh.

I honestly don't feel like I'm that empathetic, I said yes to 5 but I think that has to do more with anxiety. I'm really not great at figuring out what people are feeling tbh :jisoosmh:

that could be too.
I have read that a lot of time those with social anxiety have an overly strong ability to notice other's feelings which makes sense. Generally they become anxious because they're more capable of noticing sign that someone may be upset, but they notice it even when it may not be related to them which is why they begin to believe that it's their doing. I'm just an exception in that regard :haylul:

No and yes. I've always had a gift for reading people and sensing things in general, surviving in bad areas made me more aware but I have somewhat of an emotional blockage, when it comes to sympathising and empathising.
I can understand what someones feeling easily and why but I actually can't or don't feel it personally so I don't feel sad when they feel sad, my Own emotions are independent of them, so I don't really feel anything for them but I'm fine to discuss whatever is bothering someone.

My answer for all of these test questions is yes, so I think that I also can be an empath... But I will not say this for sure because I am diagnosed with Avoidant Personality Disorder which has some similar "symptoms" like an empath's traits, as I see... For example very easy to hurt a people's feelings who has AvPD.
I myself live like a hermit actually since a long time because of my oversensitivity and anxiety...
So I am really introverted.
Although, true that I think that it's very possible that I would be an introverted person without AvPD too since this my basic personality... Plus I am an INFJ especially, which can make me an empath.

Strange thing that it happened with me in the past that someone told a sad and tragic real story and I imagined myself in that story without will and I started to feel myself so bad emotionally that the others thought that I will faint because my face became pale on a visible way... So it can be quite scary and uncomfortable too if you are an emphat by my opinion.

At the end of my post let me tell you that I am sorry if this was strange and messy... Or if there were some mistakes in thetext!
