Background

Edge of The Empire is popular tabletop RPG part of Star Wars franchise. It’s part of larger series of Star Wars roleplaying games and focused on corners of the Star Wars universe instead of the main conflict between Jedi and Sith, Rebellion and the Empire. Instead it focuses on the Outer Rim and you get to play as a bounty hunter, smuggler, mercenary or scientist etc.

Tabletop rpgs for those who are less familiar with the subject are basically games that you can play together with irl group. As they are rpgs you often get to create your own character and if you want you can truly roleplay and act as them- but sometimes there is also ready made characters that you just pick from. The game usually has game master who has written script for the game and facilitiates it as well as moves the enemies of the story. Most popular and known tabletop rpg at the moment is DnD, Dungeons and Dragons that most of you have probably heard off.

I have played one campaign of the game, including around 10 meetings which I participated little more than half in (due to living in another city than where they were kept xd). I will be review the game based on this campaign, but please note that experiences of RPGs can vary a lot from GM to GM, for example some GM’s focus on battle heavy scenarios and some on more of exploration and puzzles.

Getting ready to play

There is quite lot of things required to set up so starting out of campaign isn’t easiest thing. You need GM who is familiar with rulebook and battle systems, players need to create a character and you need to decide when the campaign will be held and where. The game requires dices for the game as well and you need to have enough for them for the group. Also the skill points and weapon systems have quite lot of numbers so it’s not easiest game to play, especially for beginners though and you need GM who knows the game.

We had semi-ready characters to choose from, they had vague backstories and skillsets already ready. I got to choose the name, race and put down skill points to start building my character up. I settled with Twi’lek explorer. She wasn’t as much of fighter type than stealth and charming type, good at getting out of situations.

Twilek’s look like this and mine was blue too, so pretty much like this (the things on their heads are called lekku!):

The campaing

Campaign was lot of fun, especially thanks to our GM that had grafted interesting scenarios for the each session for us to play through. We kept throwing him off a bit with our choices, but that just made it more fun. I think most of us ended up being quite morally grey, as fits to Edge of Empire! At times our characters kept arguing and even splitting up cause we didn’t agree on approaches, and constantly getting in the trouble.

Tbh, our end of the campaign wasn’t happy ending as we bite way too much and my character got even captured by the Empire, auch. But it was interesting to play a session that didn’t end up with happily and heroically xd

Final thoughts

Star Wars: The Edge of Empire is rly fun game and I especially loved how it wasn’t about the common conflict of the movies and instead focused more on the common folks in the middle of it all. It felt more of ”Guardians of Galaxy” type of story, where rag-tag of cast-outs bands together for common goal and bicker they way out of troubles.

However, the game isn’t most beginner friendly and it would be rly good to have some previous tabletop rpg experience. And GM who knows what they are doing, can’t stress this enough xd Sometimes all the checking your numbers and then weapons and then dices got bit tiring. I’m not biggest fan of number heavy rpgs, prefer more the roleplaying elements of them.

For a score I'd give it a 8/10, it's not the best rpg I have played as lot of numbers and systems can be bit confusing. But it has lot you can do with it and our game campaign was rly fun with good story with twists and great characters :)

@Darth_Felflame yep so kinda noticed in the half-way that this might not count as review thread for the points, but well wanted to do it anyways :jisoosmh:

Hmm, tabletop rpgs are definitely different kind of games do might be! But that doesnt make it easy, from rpgs i have played its in the middle for difficulty, maybe bit on higher end. DnDs are usually easier!

Thats good then, for some reason i havent played any Star War video games although i own some :D

Its pretty much 3 to 4 hours a session, tabletop rpgs tend to get long :)
