Would you tell people about your parents being divorced?? (1 Viewer)

Gosh should one feel so uncomfortable with this? Like I have no trouble saying it on a site like this. But when comes to people that know me and see me often, I feel I did something wrong as if it's a sin or something. (I just told a not so close friend of mine about that, the reason I am currently so busy that can't work on x project is my parents)

Is it considered something that should only be mentioned with close friends??? If anyone has an experience or could think as if they were in a situation like that?

Eventually you'll have to, esp. if your friends know your parents. In my case I've told a couple of friends who have asked me about my parents and aside from the initial awkwardness, nothing else happens after that. I guess my friends are considerate and they actually do not dig into it.

As for me, the reason why my parents divorced is pretty bad so I’d rather not tell anyone about it unless if they’re someone I know and trust. It’s not something that I can easily talk about either. However, if you feel comfortable talking about it with others, whether you’re close to them or not, I really don’t see much wrong with it

Divorce just hurts, only thing I can say about it.

Parents split up when I was 5 and remarried years later to a woman, I don't like very much.

My parents are divorced in everything but name really, but I don’t want to explain all that jazz so I just conveniently leave out the fact that my dad doesn’t live with us anymore lol

My parents aren't the most favourite of people by myself or my twin, I will say that much.

I personally don't have a problem with it... It seems normal to me. Maybe it's because they have been divorced for 20 years now. I mean, people don't really ask about whether they're together or not and I don't randomly bring it up either but whenever the topic arises, I just tell people I live with my mum and I guess people just put two and two together. It does get uncomfortable when they ask why they're divorced but I can easily evade the topic now so it's not too big of an issue for me I guess. But the fact that they're divorced is no secret and it's definitely not anything I'm ashamed of either.
I can see why it would be uncomfortable for older kids whose parents are going through a divorce though. I hope it gets easier for you and if you don't want to, you don't have to talk about it to anyone. It's your family and private matter so who you want to share it with is up to you. Since it's a new but huge change, it's only natural to feel uncomfortable and unhappy so don't feel bad about it.

My parents didn't divorce but they were split for a few years, I don't feel bad about telling people and I didn't back when they were still split either, I didn't go around telling everyone I met but like if the topic came up or somebody asked then i'd talk about it. For me it wasn't anything 'forbidden' it was just another thing that happened and it was okay to talk about in appropriate situations.

I most likely would after a period of time, I'm generally good at talking about really traumatic issues, only when asked, i wouldn't just drop it out of no where, I do like to keep to myself
....although it's fucked up to say but it would have been a nicer reality even though I would have been sad..
But that's not the case, cause they never married and their relationship was a facade and quite abuse (physically and emotionally) on both sides, I was a mistake of teenagers... So
Maybe saying my parents were divorce would have made it easier than trying to explain why my dad was never around as a kid.

Honestly you should deal with it how you feel comfortable, you don't have to tell anyone you don't want to, it's a personal stituation that does affect you so you should be able to talk about when you or if you feel like it.

It depends I guess. Sometimes they just split up and you could be fine talking about it, but sometimes a divorce could affect you deeply and the reasons might not be something you're comfortable sharing with others.
Tbh I think it should be fine to say you're divorced and ideally people shouldn't ask why. I never ask why the divorce happened. But you do get people who decide to press the matter and make things awkward.

I think it has more to do with how it happened than the fact that they're divorced. Divorce isn't incredibly uncommon, but I'd feel far more comfortable talking about it if it was a case of parents just deciding that things don't work out vs if traumatic events or violence occured or something. Sometimes people are too nosy so if I didn't want to explain I probably wouldnt mention it

I am pretty open about that. a lot of shitty things happened so I rather talk it out with people I know who care then let it eat me inside
