Appreciation A short tale about my obsession with Shigaraki Tomura (MHA) (1 Viewer)

It all started when I finished yet another anime series in the span of 2 days, this time it was Nagi No Asukara. So I thought, if I have this much time on my hands I think I can take on a longer series and as I thought about what to watch, I briefly remembered My Hero Academia, most of the character designs weren't to my immediate liking from what i've seen of it but hey it still has a cool fire and ice boii who bears a scar with a tragic backstory and daddy issues and that's something I can get behind so i'm sure it'll be worth the watch!

The first time I saw my boii Shigaraki was in the end of episode 9 when he comes thru Kurogiri's warp gate. I didn't have many thoughts back then, just 'wow, that's a pretty cool character design, what a handy man!', A thought I am sure I shared with many upon their first introduction of Shigaraki.

The 2nd season comes around and my feelings don't grow too much, I just come to appreciate the character design more as we get to see his malice grow towards Deku as well as Stain after he turns down his offer to partner up and then upstages his massive attack on Hosu city, and then the final episode happens, and this badass mf just walks up to Midoriya and threatens him with his life as well as 20-30 bystanders just to ask him what he's doing wrong. I hadn't realised it yet, but my affection grew at extortionate levels after that.

During the 3rd season we see him try to turn Kacchan to the bad side, of course we all knew this was going to be a failure if we all listened to Aizawa, but my baby tries his best anyway and I can appreciate the effort since it's okay to make mistakes and he always learns from it <3. He almost gets captured after this fuck up and it's looking real bad for him but the heroes never expected baby boii's sensei to come out of his super creepy man cave to come rescue his successor and fuck shit up for the heroes, it was real sad when he was being forced to run away by his sensei though, my bby just wanna protecc his sensei but instead sensei proteccs him

and at least Toga was super cute when she was stood in front of the warp gate with all the other villains being magnetized to fly towards her. There's also a moment at the 30 second mark of Odd Future OP when my baby is looking all dejected kneeling on the floor and a hand comes out to pat him on the head and all I can say is same honestly, I wanna give him headpats too

And then lastly in season 4, Overhaul seems to have the upper hand over my baby, but then he ends up with no hands, and my baby is left with his first real win and i'm super proud

I started the series on 17th of May and finished on 23rd. I started off ordering just a t-shirt of him... and then I ordered the Funko Pop figure....... And then I finally gave in and ordered a plushie which was likely the last one in stock since it showed up as out of stock shortly after that .......... but then I ordered another slightly smoller plushie too........................ and then to top it all off I ordered my first ever Nendoroid figure for £56... Can you guess who it was? Yeah, it's Shigaraki Tomura, my baby boii

In total in between finishing the series and now i've spent around £140 on this boii not including shipping, my love for him is unstoppable and just a tad expensive

I can't wait for all my babies to arrive i'm so excited, it should all hopefully arrive this month but there's a chance some of it might take until next month

It won't change my happiness when it arrives no matter how long it takes though

Shigaraki is pretty interesting as villain, he has pretty much growing a lot too in that role as first he was pretty childish and naive to me.

Hot take: I also find MHA's character designs kinda ugly

I do tend to like the villains somewhat but I was surprised myself when someone other than Todoroki ended up being my favourite, I still love Todoroki too though ofc

It was really interesting how he was so childish at first, but at the same time I didn't feel like he was any less threatening especially with All For One basically patting him on the head telling him it's okay and he can do better next time each time he made a mistake, almost like a really fucked up father figure. Like some people i've seen didn't like Shigaraki at all at first because they just thought he was going to be this evil for the sake of being evil sort of character but I don't see how people could have thought that even just from the start? The moment we heard All For One basically giving him a pat on the head when he failed to kill All Might I think it was pretty clear that there was going to be a lot more to the character. If anything I feel like All For One is the kinda bland evil for the sake of evil character instead of Shigaraki, but honestly that's okay because the story isn't about All For One as the main villain, the story is about the stakes being passed down to the successors from All Might and All For One to Deku and Shigaraki.

Also i've been rewatching the whole thing cuz I was still hyped by the time I finished it and of course i'm a professional rewatcher if Hanako-kun has taught me anything about myself but Shigaraki's naive childishness is so endearing now with the 2nd watch cuz i've had time to like him now and it's like I wanna give him a pat on the head when he fails too and in the first season when he get shot a bunch of times before escaping thru the warp gate I was just like NOOO MY BBY

It's interesting how different my experience was with just the first and second watch tbh

Yeah I feel like most of the designs are really American style and like there's a reason i'm watching Japanese cartoons and not American ones I really didn't like Midoriya's design at first because of this but the cinnamon roll has grown on me, I absolutely hate the scenes of him as a kid in season 1 though, season 1 was all around the worst for character designs like they even made Todoroki look weird with his superhero costume being literally just half ice, idk what it was like in that part of the manga tho so idk if they made it weird just for that first season or what... There are some character designs I still really can't stand like Mineta and Tsuyu (and I can't stand their voices too, if this is how much I dislike it in the Japanese dub I hope I never get to hear them in the English dub kek) but I feel like the overall feel of the show and art style is slightly less Americanized after the first season, maybe there are subtle differences or maybe I just got used to it idk.

I think there definitely is more to his character and it's interesting to see the growth of villain. That's not what you usually see in stories, villain becoming more smarter as the story goes on and more menacing too. And his relationship with All for one definitely is quite interesting even if fucked up! All for one is definitely raising a villain mastermind out of him.

Plus when we usually see villains grow as characters you see them grow from pretty strong to MEGA strong, you don't really see them from this early on throwing tantrums when things don't go their way and just being a huge flop over and over again, maybe because writers think that the villain will seem less threatening to the audience if they aren't immediately pretty strong or maybe it's just harder to write them that way so they don't bother going that route and just focus on fleshing out the protagonist only. I hope more writers see how impactful a well thought out villain can be. I think I said this for me reason for joining the dark side (kek) but if you have a decent hero and decent villain then the villain is probably going to be underwhelming and kinda suck, but if you compare a really well written hero and villain then the villain will probably be one of the most impactful characters in the entire story. Good villains are meh but great villains are phenomenal.

See I kinda feel bad for disliking Tsuyu so much cuz she seems to be so popular and people really adore her, maybe i'd be able to get over it if it wasn't for the weird voice thing, whenever she has a line that's longer than 3 words I just wanna yeet myself outta this world. I know they tryna sound like a frog but like u can make a weird voice without it being that grating i'm so sorry

I don't know much about Kylo Ren prior to the recent trilogy so to me he mostly sticks out for playing his part in the ultimate enemies to lovers fanfic trope except the fanfic writers didn't even need to do anything cuz it's canon

It's a Banpresto Tomonui one (idk if u know the brand but i'm assuming u know more about animu merch than me so maybe you'll recognise the brand name kek) and Toga, Shigaraki and Dabi were all Vol. 4 of MHA Tomonui plushies and they were only released last year but there isn't anywhere that I can find them that's officially licensed where they aren't sold out or already delisted ;-; but the website that I ordered the Shigaraki Nendoroid had the MHA Vol. 7 plushies which had Overhaul, BUT THEN OVERHAUL WAS SOLD OUT. So I emailed the company basically asking if they would be able to get more Overhauls and if they'd ever be able to get Vol. 4 stocked (they said it's very unlikely I cri) BUT they said they went thru their stock and they still had some Overhauls left so they put them back up on the website SO NOW I HAVE AN OFFICIALLY LICENSED OVERHAUL ON THE WAY and I also have the whole Toga, Shigaraki and Dabi set on the way too except its not a licensed seller and I got it off Amazon so just pray with me that they're real please and I also managed to get the last ones AGAIN cuz they showed as sold out right after I ordered them AGAIN what is this luck omg

Like I wanna get a Todoroki plushie at some point too but even if a certain version goes out of stock they're always going to release another version of him, it's like him, Deku and Bakugo are like the big 3 of the MHA world, i'll have much less of a problem getting merch for those characters so the villains are main priority and i'm a lot more willing to pay extortionate shipping fees and import taxes for the villains too, whereas for Todoroki it'd be much easier to find from a UK source kek

Overhaul is like peak shitty but he's so set on his goal that u gotta respect the guy. His entire character was so impactful even though he lost in the end, hell even the way he lost was literally an iconic ending for his arc (and my baby was super cool too uwu) This video is a good watch if u haven't seen it already ofc

Collecting figures is hard cuz there are a lot of figures that I can still get but they're not as 'chibified' and look more accurate to the anime, but the thing is when ur making a figure that looks more like the anime I feel like it really needs to look so accurate like it literally just walked out of the screen otherwise it's gonna look weird and its kinda hard to see them properly just from photos online

Plushies are fine tho i'll collect an army of plushies if I can no matter what shape or size
