Spoiler Alert: The following review contains mild spoilers. I know, I know always end up telling the whole thing but this time it's true. I really want to spoil the hell out of this tbh but I won't. 😇
First of all, I'll divide this review into smaller parts since there's a lot to cover and at the end I'm going to do some general appreciations about the series.
Issues #11-#12 are called The Rule of Five. Here we have more of Vader assuming the leading role of The Inquisitorius squad and discovers that he's not only an enemy of the Jedi but also is seen as a threat inside the Empire. Of course, with the guidance of his master Vader solidifies his position as the number two, whose power is only below the Emperor in the entire galaxy.
There's not much to say about this chapters. Just reminds us the intrigues inside the Empire and the thirst for power but Vader does his best to overcome every difficulty and it's not afraid at all to make demands to his master, something that builds up to his reputation, esp. for the troops.
Next, we have issues #13- #17 called Burning Seas. On these ones, Vader and the Inquisitors are sent to planet Mon Cala after suspicions that a Jedi is giving political advice to the Mon Calamari king.
I liked this chapters in particular because we can see more of the politics of Star Wars and Moff Tarkin as governor of the planetarian sector, as one can imagine, everything that could go wrong went wrong but this little back story about the Mon Calamari and the important role they'd play in the future rebellion against the Empire was very interesting.
Finally, issue #18 is kind of a side story with Moff Tarkin and Vader, it doesn't add much to the main story so I guess it's like a filler and issues #19- #25 are the final arc: Fortress Vader.
Is basically the story of the construction of Vader's castle- fortress. Here we have a combination of epicness and dark humor that I was not ready for. In particular, the humor was very well done, involving Vader but not going out of character at all. I have to say the last arc is the darkest but most meaningfull of all. It offers more on Vader's emotional and mental state than the others and the motivations in his new life as a Sith Lord. I believe I talked about it on my previous reviews but for me, now it's clear that Anakin embodies Darth Vader because he can't accept the painful truth, he hasn't given up on his loved ones. We can see how he tries to punish himself and the world for everything that happened and the desperate attempts to recover what he lost, of course, Sidious fuels those emotions in Vader to obtain more power to himself but I think at the very end (issue #25) Anakin finally got the answer to all his pleas.
To finish the review with a general thought, the series is so well done that I honestly can't complain about anything. It delivers on every aspect, esp. character development which is the main reason for the comic, to begin with. It gives the character of Darth Vader so much needed depth and we can see him not only as the menacing Dark Lord we were told, during most part of the movies but also as person, the frail and desperate man behind the mask. The art was superb, esp. the last covers... The only thing left for me to say is, it was fucking awesome and I can't wait to read the other Darth Vader comics.
Score: 5/5.
