On demand of @vogue and @Nekone, I have made a horse 101 thread cuz apparently they felt the need to learn how to horse.
And since I personally love to learn about other people's sports, I've decided to answer all your wildest dreams about equestrians and such.

What is the biggest monetary expense when it comes to owning a horse? Boarding it, feeding it, etc? I wanted a horse when I was a young'un but my mom was wise and never let me have one :)

Your mom is very wise.
It really depends. If you want to keep your horse in a stable (with that I mean owned by someone with arenas etc), the money you pay for a stable is the most expensive (this usually includes the horse's food, hay, pasture, mucking out the stable and using the facilities (like arena))
However, if you want to own one on a pasture, food and hay are definitely your number one cost.
Blacksmith is usually every 6 to 8 weeks and the prize depends on what irons your horse has (or if he hasn't, it's cheap of course to just trim the hooves)
Tack is also very expensive but a one time expensive (unless you really REALLY want that one pink saddle pad to add to your collection)
There's also vet which you hopefully don't have to pay a lot for and dentist too

So I'd say it really depends on situations.

That's what I heard from other people, my town was full of country bumpkins and my old friend had a horse so I knew a bit about them.
What breed of horse would you say is the best for people who have never had a horse before? Are breeds of horses similar to dogs in that they have different temperaments genetically?

Oh yeah definitely
You can organize breeds in warm bloods, whole bloods and cold bloods.
It really depends on what you want to do with the horse. Generally, warm bloods and whole bloods have more blood and are used for sports so they really need to exercise. A typical example is the Arabian horse. They are generally known to be fast and kinda wild. There are of course exceptions like you have with dog breeds.
For beginners, I'd say cold bloods are the best. They are generally calm but very strong.

I have seen a lot of Fjords and Haflingers that are generally calm, so I'd go with them if you just want to keep them. For riding, they are quite stubborn (but you have a sport version of the Haflinger). There are also mini horses and the Falabella, a pony smaller than the Shetland. You can't ride them but from what I know, are doing really well with small kids to teach them how to cope with horses. I don't own one nor do I know anyone personally who owns one but I know that they are bought for small kids so I guess they're very calm and trustworthy generally.
Of course, I would recommend that you only get a horse if you know enough about them and their needs.
Tip: don't get Shetlanders cuz they're devils and seem sweet but Oooooohhh boyyyy are they a handful

Jumping, reining, dressage, vaulting, horse ball, polo, trick riding, endurance, cross and so many more things!
But yea I love to groom my horses and I used to drive with my shetland (unfortunately, he's injured and ripped his tendons so he'll never be able to pull one again)
