Depends on what friendship means to a person really.
Some Friendship require more maintenance, constant interaction and some don't, like mine for example function different because I'm Not as social and like to be alone and people are draining to me but when I see my friends in person is like we just talked the othetlr day despite not hearing from me for months, they understand how I am and I understand them, hence my friends have been my friends for 15 years +.
But regardless, trust, honesty, understanding of each other, common interests usually makes it work, most of the time it just comes naturally.
