Is calling someone 'exotic' actually insulting? (1 Viewer)

I actually asked this question on Onehallyu, but I can't find the thread RIP. Anyway, I've heard that when you call someone 'exotic' it can have racist undertones as you're implying that the person doesn't belong based off their skin tone or ethnicity and therefore doesn't fit the norm of what beauty is. It can also be dehumanizing as we typically use the term 'exotic' in terms of animals and places (ex. 'exotic pets', 'exotic beach resort') so calling a human being exotic is just...eh...But I've also heard that it's a compliment and is just another word for saying that someone is unique. What do u guys think?

I would not dare to use that to describe a person. Simply because I think that people find offensive EVERYTHING.
I feel like being exotic is a matter of culture of place. I think that if I had a chance to visit Korea, I´d definitely be exotic with my almost-albino-like features. I would not find it offensive, but I know many people would.
Personally, I would be carefully with any other adjectives than "unique" and "beautiful". I feel like those might not be offensive, but then someone might come after you for STOP JUDGING ME FOR MY LOOKS. THAT IS SO SEXIST.

uhh, well as a black person.. I'm not a fan of it. Ppl may be using it as a compliment to say someone is "different" or "unique", but the only reason ppl see us like that is because we're not represented enough in media and in beauty standards. POC ppl have been around just as long if not longer and ppl still wanna look at us and go "wOOW exotic! like some endangered rain forest birrd, so cool". I wouldn't say I'm offended by it, but its annoying lol. Ppl that call me exotic are the same ones that come up to me and touch my hair without asking.. as if I'm an attraction in some exotic animal petting zoo . People that think its a compliment don't have a long and dark history of being compared to animals.

ok i was aware of the fact we should not ''bash'' so in other words talk REALLY BAD about other places, hating on them but
i thought it was allowed on here to express an opinion that i had a bad experience but apparently i am not allowed to say i have a bad experience somewhere else? think that is a bit weird, considering i am sure i was speaking in general terms in my posts
sure it was obvious i was not being positive about the place but hey, isn't that normal? when you had such a bad experience somewhere else that sticks with you and you want to ''warn'' others for it if possible but without using curse words etc? i was even being postive in a way about this place
if we not allowed to talk about our experience from other places, then why do we have a thread related to another forum.... asking what your username is over there.... so you probably left the place to come be cosy over here... but why do you leave a place, most of the time because of bad experience
the whole reason this place got created i heard, if i understood it right....
so why am i being shut down when i say my opinion in a general way without using insulting and bad words?
i think it is a bit too much and my posts were rather harmless
i would of agreed with the deleting of the posts if my posts contained bad words, curse words etc and i was being really insultive in specific ways

no idea if it is allowed to reply in this matter in a thread to you or if you would of wanted this in a pm
i am not starting a fight or whatever, there is no intention of such sort in this post honestly, i think you a good moderator and member but i just disagree with this ruling

Fair point, fair point! The hair thing is also pretty relevant as before I decided to relax my hair people would do the same, but once I did no one really gives a shit except to comment (not touch) on how long and shiny it is. In that case it's all about conformity. So what the majority doesn't see everyday is automatically put into the 'other' category and therefore 'exotic' even though black people and their natural hair have been existing since the dawn of time lmao.

I understand that you had a negative experience, but we want to be careful about how we interact with other forums. You're right that you weren't going overboard, but it happens to be a rule that we're pretty strict about which does in a way stem from our creation, which is a long story. Because you weren't being overboard I didn't give you a verbal or anything of the sort, but any negativity towards other forums as a rule isn't allowed on this forum.
