I've made a thread about this anime a few weeks ago when there were like only 3 episodes released I think.
Now that I finished newly released Episode 8 I gotta say,
that it's one of the best original short Anime I've seen.
Since it's most likely to only get one season (which is a shame sadly), it won't take you much to binge through it
but it's definitely worth it.
If you know Danganronpa (which is another underrated game + anime)
you'll immediately notice how well designed the characters are.
Short, spoiler-free intro
5 Akudamas (highly wanted criminals) are being recruited to rescue a 6th Akudama named Cutthroat.
With a pretty innocent bystander accidentally being thrown into this group of characters.
Now all these characters are really morally bad, but you can't help yourself rooting for them,
what makes this even better is how they interact with each other.
It's fun, it's creepy, it's lovable, they are all able to bring their vast different personalities into this.
The world building is great.
Most of the episodes have a mid-segment of a propaganda show that's being shown multiple times throughout the day to kids in the city of Kansai
explaining what happened in the war between Kansai and Kantou, and how Kansai was built up from dust after they lost.
Since all our characters live in this city it would be unrealistic to have them explain to each other about Kansai,
what the Anime is doing is refreshing and creative, especially because it still keeps the character of the whole Anime.
Especially with these 2 presenters it's fun to watch.
A shark and a high af rabbit.
The world itself
A beautiful, neon-cyberpunk city. But that's what you see on the outside, the Anime explores many different, surrounding areas that are abandoned, shut down, destroyed for you to experience both sides of the coin.
The atmosphere they are building is top notch.
The animations + visuals
If this isn't one of the best looking Anime out there right now I don't know what is.
For me personally, it's on the same level as Fire Force which is so visually pleasing.
And it's much better than the current Haikyuu season.
There is one episode with an all out fight in a rainy storm, thunder and all that at an abandoned theme park and
I could only watch in awe with how beautifully animated every single second was.
The use of color and atmosphere in this anime is just too amazing.
A fun thing is that each episode is named after a famous movie.
EP.1 SE7EN
EP2. Reservoir Dogs
EP3. Mission: Impossible
EP4. Speed
EP5. Dead Man Walking
EP6. Brother
EP7. The City of Lost Children
EP8. Black Rain
and the next EP9. is going to be called
"The Shining"
If you have seen it, you know shits about to go down.
The only thing I dislike is the OP and ED music (the animations and themes of them are beautiful as well.)
Sadly, due to it being only a 1 Season anime, they can't delve into the characters too much,
but just enough so you can get the idea of their thinking and motivations, what thrives them and such.
The anime is over the top, but it has it's calm moments, sweet and genuine character development that you do end up attached to the characters although maybe not to the extreme that you'll cry if they die, which is a high possibility in an anime from the Danganronpa creators.
But if you're looking into something for a short term watch I'd definitely recommend Akudama Drive.
@Anime
Ps. I'm living for this Anime currently as much as I do for A.C.E
