under the assumption that all the gmail accounts are fubar.

Gmail should be fine, but google did have issues yesterday, so maybe that is the cause of the account email bouncing.

Google was having major problems yesterday when most of it's services went down. I guess it still is. Hopefully it doesn't last long and everyone with a gmail account registered here will be fine really soon.
