It's a live action adaptation of a manga with the same name. Basically a deathgame/survival show where our protagonist Arisu (Alice) along with his 2 friends Karube and Chota one day find almost everyone in Tokyo have mysteriously vanished. The only way to survive is by clearing dangerous life or death games as they try to uncover the mystery and stay alive. The main protagonist, Arisu Ryohei is played by Kento Yamazaki who played L in the live action Death Note movie.
I'm usually against these Battle Royale/Maze runner kinda shows but surprisingly, 3 episodes in- I'm really loving Alice in Borderland.
1. The production design and budget- top notch. Some of the shots are really impressive, it's really well shot. Impressive looking locations, good use of CG too when they show the vast Tokyo city completely empty and unpopulated.
2. The leads are all charismatic and have good chemistry- the lead heroine Tao Tsuchiya esp is really impressive in action scenes.
3. The survival games- The games are all incredibly thrilling and keep you on the edge of your seat. Each game is designated with a card suit and a number denoting it's difficulty level- for example one game might be a 7 of spades in difficulty while other might be a 8 of diamonds. Each suit has its own genre.
Clubs- Team games/collab efforts.
Spades- Physical strength/endurance
Diamonds- Battle of wits
Hearts- Games of betrayal.
The stakes are always high, characters die from their mistakes, nobody is safe.
It's 8 episodes long, available on Netflix, and has been greenlit for a Season 2
