It's a live action adaptation of a manga with the same name. Basically a deathgame/survival show where our protagonist Arisu (Alice) along with his 2 friends Karube and Chota one day find almost everyone in Tokyo have mysteriously vanished. The only way to survive is by clearing dangerous life or death games as they try to uncover the mystery and stay alive. The main protagonist, Arisu Ryohei is played by Kento Yamazaki who played L in the live action Death Note movie.

I'm usually against these Battle Royale/Maze runner kinda shows but surprisingly, 3 episodes in- I'm really loving Alice in Borderland.

1. The production design and budget- top notch. Some of the shots are really impressive, it's really well shot. Impressive looking locations, good use of CG too when they show the vast Tokyo city completely empty and unpopulated.

2. The leads are all charismatic and have good chemistry- the lead heroine Tao Tsuchiya esp is really impressive in action scenes.

3. The survival games- The games are all incredibly thrilling and keep you on the edge of your seat. Each game is designated with a card suit and a number denoting it's difficulty level- for example one game might be a 7 of spades in difficulty while other might be a 8 of diamonds. Each suit has its own genre.
Clubs- Team games/collab efforts.
Spades- Physical strength/endurance
Diamonds- Battle of wits
Hearts- Games of betrayal.
The stakes are always high, characters die from their mistakes, nobody is safe.

It's 8 episodes long, available on Netflix, and has been greenlit for a Season 2 :pandahappy:

I just finished it yesterday and really liked it.
It's much better than Sweet Home, which is a webtoon adaptation as well.

The use of CG was limited but when it happened it looked good.
The story was a bit predictable, especially everything about the last 2 episodes lmao
However both friends of him actually dying had me shooketh, I expected them to find a way and continue together but man that was actually heart wrenching

I love these kind of shows tho, I'm all in for any Battle Royal kind of shows.
I really hope our seemingly 4 main protags at the end survive till the end altho I doubt it
I'm bad with names but I think the climber girl and the other guy with longer blondish hair are going to die if any of the 4 do

I usually don't seek out Battle Royale shows because most of the time the endings suck or the initial premise/hype is too much for the rest of the story to live up to, but I was really pleasantly surprised with Alice in Borderland :sj_weary:
And yep, during most of the empty Tokyo shots I was like these are obviously real locations, not just a large set or whatever, I wonder how they shot these lol.

Agreed on the first spoiler, I really wasn't prepared for that :yolk:

Depending on when they filmed it (if it was this year) it seemed to have been much easier to film or edit out people of the all empty locations, or they ended up paying a lot to have those places just for them so no one would be allowed to go there or something lol, really excited for season 2 tho

Watched this show and I absolutely loved it :pandalove: I also really enjoyed Sweet Home (wasn't too sure after the first episode but it got much better with time in my opinion).

[spoilers ahead]

I binged it a few weeks ago.

Loved it.

And am eagerly awaiting Season 2.

I definitely enjoyed the first half the most.

I actually think it shined best when it was on a smaller scale in terms of characters prior to the introduction of The Beach.

I still loved it as it concluded the season.

But thought beginning dynamics were particularly enthralling. Especially the relationship between the lead and his buddies. I thought it was unfortunate they were no longer present so early. As their dynamic and friendship combined with the introduction of the parkour lady was really strong. Also I just thought the atmosphere was actually more striking before the introduction of so many people.

The feeling of isolation in this weird empty game world was so engaging.

And it lost something somewhat when it broadened in scope and cast.

But still despite my feeling of it being more front loaded in quality, I enjoyed it until the very end. It was strong throughout.

And I'm eager for more.

Oh shit I just realized you haven't finished it.

I didn't catch that you're only 3 episodes in.

Don't read until later.
its okay lol I made the thread a while ago, I binged the rest of it in a day :haylul:

btw this show also made me discover the gorgeous Ayaka Miyoshi (who plays Ann in The Beach, the short haired lady) and she’s so good :sj_weary:
