I’m sensitive at heart so not very well. It’s not that I get mad, I just become sad and closed off because I feel bad for screwing things up. Yesterday was the very first time a customer was not happy with how their dog was groomed and basically demanded a refund “or else”. It was a puppy and I had spoken to the woman beforehand and she wanted an inch off. But to her it was too short in the end. It was the puppy’s first groom and I even offered to groom it again for FREE. She said she was never coming back and acted like a complete Karen about it even after my work profusely apologized to her. Luckily my coworkers are amazing and tried cheering me up throughout the day because they knew how much it bothered me.

I'm not great at receiving criticism either though I'm trying to get better 😅

In your case I feel like it was less criticism and more just a mean customer. I hope you're feeling better now though, an encounter like that must've been rough :c

It’s so hard tho. Especially when you feel like you’re on a roll too. Yeah, I’m hoping that I’ll never have to deal with someone like that again but the world is filled with people like that so I guess I better get used to it now than never.

I agree with Mangoey, in your case it was just a mean customer who refused to be human about it. Everyone makes mistakes and it´s not like you had hurt the dog or anything. A bit of understanding and compassion and things could be fine. Of course when I pay for something I would be glad to receive an appropriate service, but I can also be understanding about small mistakes, especially when I can see people are honestly sorry about making them. She was just being dumb. Maybe she had a terrible day herself? or someone was stepping on her toes in her own job, so she was just taking that on you, which is unfair but that is how I often feel people carry themselves.

As for your question. I think it depends on who is giving the criticism and how. When it is a person I respect and who I know is really good at their field, I am very open to it and I see it as a way to improve myself. When I´m not being yelled at and kindly explained the pros and cons of my work, that´s awesome. Make me better, I want to be amazing :D. But when it´s someone who I just don´t vibe with in general, I don´t respond well. I immediately become defensive and I can get bitter. It´s not a good personality trait, I´m the first to admit, but not everyone is entitled to criticise :D.

I appreciate when people tell me beforehand like "May I offer some advice.... or ... Is it ok to tell you that ..." so that I can prepare and calm myself down. I tend to take things less personally afterwards. I take criticism of my work better because I work with people and I understand that knowing what bugs them might actually help me in the future, but I don´t like when people want to offer their criticism on my life or looks. I find that unnecessary and it just makes me angry because my general opinion is "live and let live".

Thank you for your kind and reassuring words. :sanapray: I very much appreciate it. Yeah, when others criticize you when they shouldn’t have a say is also frustrating, but hopefully they too will learn from their own mistakes in the future as well. I prefer it too if someone were to “offer” me advice beforehand because it also shows you how genuine and sincere they are. That to me is a sign of good character and I can respect that. But don’t yell at me for something I didn’t know or perhaps misunderstood. As a dog groomer I kind of put things into the perspective of an artist. I don’t always like my completed grooms but that’s my opinion and point of view, whereas the customer absolutely loves it. I seek out feedback all the time even if they are regulars and mostly receive positive feedback. I just want to do a good job.

Honestly, it sounds like you got a mean customer who was just trying to get a free cut for their dog.

As for your question: It depends on how people criticize me and who it is coming from. I've taken a lot of writing classes and so I've been through plenty of critiques even on personal work but in those people are usually respectful and genuinely want to help you. What i'm bad at is when people give me attitude and are usually just being spiteful and mean. EX: anytime someone in their 50+'s says my generation is weak or tells us to stop buying avocadoes where we can afford a house lol.

Really well actually.. I'm accustomed more to taking more negative things as I'm more indifferent to them, I don't really get affect by others opinions or feel anything much, so constructive critism in particular serves it purpose for me to change certain things so I can do something better I suppose, but I don't have any real emotional reaction to it.

I have more an issue with compliments and praise..they make me feel very annoyed, irritationally irritated
I just don't like focused admiration and attention on my skills or things I do in general... But I'm accepting of it cause I have manners lol

Also bare in mind, some people act like entitled pricks and aren't really giving constructive critism more so just being dickhead people.

I'd say I take criticism pretty well as I usually evaluate it on if it's an area that I am weak at and if the criticism applies to what makes me weak in that area as some people will just say things just because you don't do it their way and i'm not going to just believe my way is wrong for that

I can take it as in I don't get mad necessarily but I might get sad or insecure
I have gotten better at taking it though as it's necessary in order to improve

I can relate. At my current job I was doing great mostly, but during the summer it was just mistake after mistake after mistake. And I'd shut down. The fact that we're all wfh and I only worked in the office for two days before quarantine made it hard.

I'm better now, as I learned that I have to overcommunicate since I am still new and I don't know what I'm doing. My supervisor has told me that I'm doing great. I still make mistakes but now I own up to them, fix it, and move on.

It's totally fine to feel what you need to, and I'm glad your coworkers cheer you up.

Luckily I still get paid for the groom, regardless if it’s refunded or a discount is applied to the original price so that’s a plus. I mainly care about how the customer feels in the long run.
Omg, lol. You gotta love the elderly and their words of wisdom. Yeah, I don’t like how people think they are doing good by you by making you feel less than you are. Like tell me what to do or provide me with some entail, but don’t attack me and bring up personal shit because that’s unfair. People forget how to be polite and empathetic.

It’s easy to forget that you’re only human and that it’s not a crime to fuck up. Especially when you’re more worried about being and making things perfect. I’m glad that you overcame your troubles. You give me hope.

In my opinion, if the criticism is not asked for, it's possibly destructive, no matter the intentions. There are too many people who love to criticize calling it "constructive". That's laughable. If the criticized person hasn't asked to be criticized, it's likely for it to not be well received. If it is not well received, it is not constructive.

Gotcha, I get that having critiques on your work is demoralizing sometimes but its hard to please everyone.

Lol I don't even consider them elderly in the 50-75 range, the true elderly people to me are actually pretty chill! The 80+ crowd will give out real words of wisdom like "You are young and get to do more things nowadays go do them, enjoy yourself" and will snap at the 50-75 year olds for being mean to you lmao.
