So basically it was Halloween, there were these two kids, they’re the main characters, the detectives, at the beginning they were at a graveyard for some reason idr

there was some haunted house or horror house and some evil cat from long ago because of a horrific murder in the house, that they read about and were curious, they visited it, talked to current owner and stuff

basically one day (way before their time) this man was found murdered, and his body was disfigured so badly it was unrecognizable, he was only identified by his clothes and a pocket watch he had with an engraving that showed it was him

when his body was found, his giant black cat (way bigger than any normal cat, bigger than a lion even, like some supernatural thing) was covered in blood and licking blood of his/her(idr) paws

this cat was already not looking like a normal cat, huge, and they also found the cat covered with blood on the claws and all and the only one at the scene of the crime + super calm

the townspeople thought the cat was a monster, had murdered the owner, and put the cat in a sack, tied it, and then dropped the sack into a well and drowned the cat

the day that man was killed, another man, one from out of town, who was staying as a tenant with the victim or whatever, went missing, he was never seen again

assumption was he fled town and was never caught

so everyone is blaming out of town guy and/or giant cat for this guys death, the cat is a monster, other guy a murderer

maybe they worked together etc

how come other guy was never found, new identity?

what ACTUALLY happened all those years ago, that the kids found out and “solved the mystery” - the victim never actually died and neither newcomer nor cat killed him.

HE murdered the tenant, disfigured his body so badly it was unrecognizable, burned tenant’s clothes in fireplace, dressed tenant in his clothes and pocket watch to fake his own death, the cat was a normal cat just huge, cat didn’t even witness murder, cat was walking around, stepped in all the blood lying around from such a horrific death, and was trying to clean his or herself

the “victim” robbed the tenant, fled town after murdering the tenant in such a violent, horrific way that he was completely unrecognizable, while taking his own death, and framing both his cat and an innocent person who was actually the victim as his killers, also resulting in his innocent cat’s lynching (which he knew would happen), and both the tenant and his cat being demonized for DECADES maybe over a century idr, while he started a new life and identity, never got caught, and lived to old age
