Wouldn’t we refer to it as a cartoon, not an anime tho? I think the reason avatar has that association is because of the art style and the eastern inspired fictional world, but the creators (of the show) are white men as far as I know

that’s why it’s weird when people who don’t call anything else anime call this anime though It is 100% western. Especially since they’re Asian themselves.

like we wouldn’t call a Spider-Man cartoon or SpongeBob or family guy anime

To me, they're all still under the animations umbrella. Ofc, there are different styles, and different genres.
But now we're getting into certain shows having art looking similar to certain styles because of it's influenced by something else.

But because it's not created in a certain country or region, it can't be called anime.

I don't call Avatar an anime btw. XD But the show creators have said they were inspired by certain anime genres and styles when it came to fight scenes and art.
