    once i'm free can you please teach me the art of interpreting kpop into different languages? i want to make a few hindi versions of some songs soon! gonna be a challenge because i am - at best - conversational in hindi, but idk there's some boa songs which i see as very indipop (look it up, you won't be disappointed) or bollywood (need non-indians to start giving fucks about bollywood beyond the big dance numbers, and possibly explore bollywood songs released before the 2000s) so a girl needs to realise her vision :sanapray:

    reading one of your takes on the unpopular opinions thread made me wonder - have you listened to colors by solar? she wrote the lyrics and composed the track. while I don't know if she personally chose house of love to choreograph and dance to the song, I admire that she has taken every opportunity to credit them, and highlight them in her mv and on music shows. it may not be perfect, but i believe it's a step up from most things of this sort in kpop

    I personally don't like the song but I defs think it's a step. Hopefully Solar by that time did have the creative control to suggest and know what she wanted to do with the concept/performance so it gets a stamp of approval from me lol.

    But yeah, I believe most 'queer' things in K-pop aren't actually genuine and fully bait so (int) fans can go "yesss queen!" Like there is a difference between Yunjin being an ally and the whole concept behind crazy (biggest example I can think of). But knowing how socially conservative Korean nationals still are it's always better to support the independent queer scene in Korea or simply admire any subtle messanging in certain releases, cause anything subtle isn't necessarily attention seeking.

    It really matters if the idol/group has the creative control. A good rule of thumb is the older they get the more freedom they have since the company wants to keep the profits rolling. Infinite, Seventeen come to mind. There are exceptions though, I believe Gfriend are limited (Hybe seems to like controlling their ggs with an iron grip).

    Also smaller companies are more willing to take risks. Both WM and Pledis entrusted a lot of their music production on the members (Jinyoung and Woozi respectively). Not nessecarily to do with creative control: Idk what company XLOV are under but I know for a fact it's nothing on or above mid tier. Doing a 'genderless' concept is something Starship wouldn't dream of doing (side note I find the genderless concept really flawed, not because I don't think it's a good idea, but because I don't think it works in an industry so open to capitalism like K-pop. Many people find artistic value in K-pop, I do too, but at the end of the day the industry exists to make money and every label has squeezed so much out of pockets because of the profit motive, photocards and feminine hygiene endorsements by male idols (which I find funny). The genderless concept just comes out really bastardised like the concept of bls).

    I've mentioned boygroups more since girlgroups still have to work harder. I can only think of g-idle who probably have control over what they do, twice maybe.

    Yeah, huge yap maybe rant, but I defs think Colours isn't bait and Solar genuinely wanted to do queer stuff. I applaud her for doing it.

    agreed with all that you say here! i just really wanted to highlight colors (sn: til the song is spelt the american way but the mini it's from is spelt with a u.... girl why solar why do you want to confuse us) as something solar has had a heavy hand in!

    also i'd like to point out that fromis have contributed to songwriting and composition! i don't know how much control they've had over the creative direction, but they have definitely contributed to writing many of their songs! i have a playlist of all those, which i'll share in a bit.

    that said though i feel like not only have fromis not had that much control over creative direction, a lot of their first forays into songwriting were definitely very company-directed. i remember seoyeon saying in an interview that her agency instructed her to start writing music with a guitar, as that "suited her image" (yeah idgi either)

    Oh yeah there's defs a difference between having influence in music production and actually having control on what the comeback will look and feel like. Like I heavily doubt skz have any say on what they do except music wise. Txt have also written some songs but their concepts will always be locked away from them until their 'lore' ends (idk when that is is for the fact I can't give a shit about their lore). Idols like Solar and her bandmates do which make their music more genuine imo. Fromis_9 were in skz' group but knowing they've signed onto a different company they might have more power in what they want to do. Same goes b1a4 and to a lesser extent seventeen, they only contributed to music production when they were younger but especially b1a4 now do have a say in what they wanna do. I can only assume it's more complicated for Seveteen knowing they're under Hybe.

    gosh sorry for the late response i'm a bit busy with life rn (you'll probably see me deactivate soon ig,,, sigh) but yeah! call me alo, i'm from india, been into kpop since 2020 but i try to seek out some of the older stuff too. can't say i really have an ult ult rn, my fave groups are rn fromis (as you could probably tell by my pfp, saerom is the loml) zb1 (from my sig, it's the lyrics to good so bad which we both loved haha), twice, shinee, svt (at one point they were my ults of ults but they've lowkey fallen off ngl), and vanner. groups like 2ne1, snsd, f(x), wjsn, nine.i, txt, stayc, and ptg are also close to my heart, with a bit of gfriend, lovelyz, tws, the wind, kara, etc thrown in <3 for the solos it's shinee members, boa, and yena.

    Fromis are defenitely a respectable group to follow even after disbandment, I got into lovelyz when they disbanded actually so I do understand the pain. Favourite era? I do enjoy lovebomb a lot and I also discovered them from dkdk :3

    Hoping zb1 do renew, the only reason I'm not a huge fan is because they may disband as fast as they debuted ;-; But yeah good so bad is great and so is the album, Insomnia made my top 100 this year rightfully so. They've been the most consistent of the produce groups so far imo.

    Shinee's great! I've been on the hunt for the atlantis album but I can never find it. I do love the solos too, I do like key's work (though I haven't checked out his most recent ep rip) and I like Onew as well. I do quite enjoy how distinctive they are in terms of their sound, they all have their own unique soundscapes that differs from usual soloists.

    Damn, I've heard a few of vanner's songs and they're great! I'm happy to see them do well after that bg survival show. I'm always estatic to see a fan of a smaller group. Nine.i are great too, I love turn it off! Happy to see wjsn and txt there too

    yeah I'm stupidly in love with boa but I'm a very new fan 😭

    my fav fromis era is probably dm for very sentimental reasons, I loved the title, i loved the mini, i loved the promo, gyuri was there (still love her to bits), and their cover of day6's time of our life (well it is it's live but i still love it ok). just, all around great memories.

    I'm a bit divided on zb1 renewing. i mean I'd love for them to stay together, but realistically I'd suppose yuehua wants hao, ricky, gyuvin, and yujin back (along with seungeon and yunseo too - reminds me, i somehow didn't mention I also like evnne). problem is i have no idea what's in store for the other guys. either way I'm more than happy to enjoy the ride for now, it's been a fun one so far, with surprisingly consistent and good music for a produce group!

    anyway what are some other interests of yours? I'm guessing you like languages, right? i find them pretty interesting too, though my knowledge is pretty limited.

    thanks to swf and smf I've also started to keep an eye on the dance scene in sk, I'm not very deeply into it but i definitely do know a bit, especially on the waacking side and on the "commercial" kpop choreo side. I've liked keeping an eye on who produces my fave kpop songs (reading thebiaslist makes that very easy) so seeing who choreographs them is pretty similar and satisfies my curiosity hahaha

KpopSource began as a small blog called ksource, created by a dedicated K-Pop fan known as @Sourcekeeper. Frustrated by the decline of welcoming, discussion-driven communities, she set out to build something different — a space where fans could talk, connect, and stay for the long term.

Over time, that simple idea grew into the community you see today. While platforms and trends have changed, the goal has remained the same: to give K-Pop fans a place that feels familiar, human, and worth returning to.
