I think the only historical author I've loved so far has been Silvia Moreno-Garcia. She writes a lot of historical horror though or thrillers. Though sometimes she mixes it up most of the time her stuff is historical with another genre thrown in there.

I tend to favor Fantasy funnily enough-I just haven't been in a fantasy mood as of late.
