Every culture, race, country, etc has bad stuff in it's past. Those bad things do not mean the good matters less. If that was the case then we all must be miserable and guilty for things we did not do, most likely were not alive for or had no decision in. It's ok to have pride in who you are...

Genealogy is the study of your families history.

You should do some genealogy, I bet you'd learn amazing things to be proud of.
