I just saw a video about 13 reasons and it pissed me off. It was this girl (very clearly black, as am I) and she was talking about how 13 reasons why was in her words "a series very clearly made by white people for white people". The reasoning she gave was the main issue at hand. For context in the show Hannah records 13 2 sided cassettes tapes detailing the reasons that lead to her suicide covered in order from 1 to 13 throughout the whole first season of the show. One reason that Hannah provides on one of her tapes is an incident from the previous school year in which one of her now former friends Alex wrote a "hot or not" list of kids at the school who had the most undesirable or desirable features in their year. On this list he had written that Hannah Baker had in his supposed opinion "the best ass" in the school which led to a rapidly rolling snowball effect of Hannah becoming the target of harassment and groping as the list was passed around and seen by the whole sophomore class. So given that those things are quite objectively unsavory for one to experience you can understand how it was a contributor to her eventual suicide but thr person making this TikTok decided to purposely misconstrue the main character's intentions and state that the only reason Hannah felt personally affected by Alex's list was because she was white and that a black woman would take the compliment as it was. This not only undermines black women that have been targets of sexual harassment because let's not beat around the bush and admit that this is that, but it also just proves that this person watched the entire first season with ears plugged and eyes taped closed. I was socialized as a black woman growing up and I can vouch for saying that, no, I wouldn't have taken it as a compliment because it's happened to me before and I've been on the edge at my breaking point just like her. People like this piss me off mainly because it's already hard enough when so much of our community thinks therapists and mental help are "white people shit" and "for pussies" and people go out and say this nonsense making it harder to be taken seriously.
