Ulysses S Grant and Harry S Truman both had the middle initial S, but for both of them the S didn’t stand for anything specific. The S in Ulysses S Grant was a clerical mistake when he was nominated to attend West Point. For Truman, the S was a compromise between both of his grandfathers names. Because both his grandfathers had a name starting with S, his parents gave him the middle initial S without giving a specific name for be for.
