Some of you may know that there are two Kansas cities in the US, bordering each other, and part of the same metropolitan area. One is in Missouri, and the other in Kansas. When people find out that the Missouri part is bigger than the Kansas part, they may wonder why it’s Kansas City, not Missouri City. And the reason why is a bit unexpected (it was to me). And it’s that Kansas City isn’t named after the state of Kansas at all. In fact, Kansas City was named Kansas City before Kansas state was named Kansas! Rather, both of them were named after the Kansas River, which was named after an anglicized version of the Kanza tribe of the area. The city was incorporated as City of Kansas in 1850 (though was called Town of Kansas before that), while Kansas joined the Union in 1861. I really shouldn’t fine this all so amusing, but I do, just because of how much I didn’t expect it :lisalaugh:
