The H.L. Hunley was a submarine build by the Confederate States of America. It wasn't the first submarine used in combat, but it was the first submarine that managed to cause deaths to the opposing side. It sank the USS Housatonic in 1864. In total, the H.L. Hunley caused 26 deaths. But, only 5 of those deaths were Union troops, while the remaining 21 were Confederates. For the confederates, 13 people died in 2 sinking incidents during training (including of the creator), and all 8 crew involved in the sinking of the Housatonic also died. On the Union side, there were 5 deaths out of a crew of around 155. So in total, the Hunley killed more of its own side than of the enemy side
