It is believed that over 80% of wild koalas are infected with chlamydia. How did this number get so high? Aside from obvious (sex), koalas can spread it through poop. Which is really unfortunate, because baby koalas grow up eating their mother’s poop (a more nutritious form called pap, but it is still poop). This means that mothers infected with chlamydia can spread it to their children.

This can become really dangerous, as koalas can go blind from it and end up starving to death (they can’t see trees and therefore can’t eat). There have been efforts to cure wild koalas, but it’s thought that the antibiotics can also make eucalyptus toxic to koalas. Today a vaccine was approved to cure koalas of chlamydia, so hopefully that helps.

For koalas it’s a less digested version specifically for babies, kind of how birds and other animals chew up food for their young or even throw it back up so it’s slightly digested It helps them eat, and in the case of koalas it’s thought to also give them a taste and liking for eucalyptus, which they eat as adults ofc
