I get not thinking a chicken might have exceptionally complex emotions, and depending on the emotions possibly not to the same level as humans for all of them, but I don’t feel like it’s outrageous to imagine that 2 chickens (who are seemingly social animals) will develop a bond with each other and care for one another. I don’t think that level of caring is “putting human emotions on them”. Animals caring for others shouldn’t always be seen as ridiculous unless it’s shown they can’t process things at that level. We’re not the same as most animals but we’re not that crazy special. Rant over

I agree. A friend of mine got into raising chickens, and the company accidentally sent him a rooster too. My friend says the rooster has CLEAR preferences on which of the chicks are under his protection, so my friend is not allowed to approach them, while his wife is.

Yeah, given their facial recognition ability and social lives that doesn’t surprise me at all. They’re not stupid animals, they’re capable of many things without it being considered “putting human abilities on animals”. For me the only time I’d be shocked that chickens have basic emotions and understanding is grocery store ones, not because they’re chickens but because they’re dead
