Back in 2004, scientists found what they believed to be an exoplanet orbiting a star. It was named Dagon and confirmed in 2012. In 2014 however, scientists realized that it disappeared. They eventually decided that what they had been seeing wasn't a planet at all but instead was a collision between 2 asteroid like objects, given the circumstances and the data gathered from the so called planet.

I would give money to see the reaction of the guy who first realized it was gone

Well with things that small it's hard to tell what they are since they're too far away to be seen. All they really knew was that there was an object reflecting light seemingly orbiting a star, and when they watched it and saw that it wasn't changing after the course of a few years they decided that it must be an unusually bright planet, since at those distances they couldn't look clearer at what it actually is.
