my understanding is that although his contract is over, he still remains in exo?

Several artists do the thing where they leave the company for their solo stuff but remain in their group with the company. Plus Lay himself said he is still a member of EXO and isn't leaving the group.

Honestly that would be my guess if he doesn't participate. Not that he didn't want to but just because SM is petty lol.

They can green-screen him in like they did with DFTF lol.

IDK. We'll just have to wait and see really. If he is in it great, if he's not, great, at least we'll have 8 of the members lol.

Usually I would agree but SM has been promoting his work and tour AFTER he left so there’s clearly a working agreement between them. Plus SNSD just had a cb when half of them are working other places now so it’s definitely doable.

like I already said, this is just my opinion
it's just that every single EXO comeback people get their hopes up and then are really disappointed when Lay is not part of the of the comeback or promote with the group
I just hope that people realize that he is not obligated to be part of this comeback and bash him when he is not

Usually we don't bash him, actually we never had, we've always blamed SM
