Embroiders in Macedonia often incorporate a flower motif associated with the hostoric battle of 1389, when the Turks defeated the Serbs on the plains of Kosovo. Legend has it that thousands of peonies grew up from the blood of slain warriors. The embroidered red hues symbolized bloodshed while the dark colours framing the red represent the nation’s sorrow at losing its freedom​
