Meaning that it is officially sanctioned as a NCAA sport, with its own tournament. The first championship will be in 2027.
And if you don’t know what acrobatics and tumbling is, it’s a sport that draws from aspects of artistic gymnastics, acrobatic gymnastics, and cheerleading, but with different types of events and opportunities. This is a video showing highlights from a competition in compulsory categories (the “easy” stuff), acrobatic categories (stunts and pyramids), toss categories (pretty self explanatory), and different tumbling categories (solo, duo, group). There are also other categories not shown here (I know the team event isn’t shown). I really like this sport, it really takes so many of the best aspects of gymnastics and cheer and consolidates it into one sport. And I love that it has a lot of opportunities for different people, since in gymnastics and cheer there’s fewer chances to do one thing you like and are good at (for example, tumbling) without also needing to do other things you may be worse at/not like (for example, uneven bars).
