Elevation, hiking 4 miles with 3000ft of elevation gain is much harder than hiking 10 miles on sand as long as you are properly shaed from the sun and have plenty of water

Mountains, the view is more dynamic, every mountain range is different. Deserts for the most part are pretty much the same. You should know, Australia is 90% desert
