Still black is still an english word so...

It was a dumb decision on the part of the lyricist.

What do you think about the skinny part though?
Koreans in general has been mixing english and korean for awhile now, you be surprised to know most koreans dont even know there is an equivalent in korean.

But its part of their group name, if it was any other group, i would fine it questionable, they have used it couple of times in their other songs, no one called them out.

and to the op I would disagree, the album is actually a new stepping stone for bp, a shit ton of people who were disinterested or unstannned bp came back for their new music. Bp has a certain type of music that appeals to the majority of people, it has nothing to do with the fact that you “outgrew” them and more to do with the fact that it seems like their music style just isn’t your taste tbh.
It has nothing to do with my taste. Also, please show the receipts of people who unstanned coming back. When I say I outgrew them, I don't mean that they are releasing music that's not to my liking, or that BLACKPINK releases bad music, but that TEDDY is recycling old trends and trying to sell them as something new on the market. It's really offensive to the listener. Musically, BLACKPINK remains the least innovative group of today. BOOMBAYAH was amazing, WHISTLE was even better, Playing with Fire showed something unlike any other group and STAY was a perfect "calm down" to the previous 4. As If It's Your Last is one of my favourite BLACKPINK tracks, but it all ends there. Everything after is based on recycling on what those 4 songs achieved (minus PWF because that track remains one of a kind). I really love the girls, and I wish they were given more artistic freedom and choice when it comes to material production, because I am sure that if girls get a say, we could run away from the clusterfuck TEDDY is putting us through. Like I said, I have no doubt it will be a commercial success because BLACKPINK fans are desperate for content and will settle for anything. Twitter is going crazy over Jisoo getting to say "BLACKPINK in your area" this time. Isn't that sad? I understand that judging by your name and the frame they are your favourite group, but I am allowed to say that I don't like this direction for them. There is a plethora of other groups who aren't afraid to investigate and delve into different genre even to show that they care about the music. When it comes to BLACKPINK, they rely on hype. YG would starve the fans long enough to the point where any release will be considered good, just because the releases themselves are scarce.

They used before as

We are black pink

And not like

Me black .... pink

There's a difference, in my interpretation

If Teddy wasn’t a part of YG I’d probably be a fan of Blackpink, which is sad. The girls themselves are great and don’t deserve the bullsh!t YG feel like they can treat them, but whenever I see Teddy’s name on music I just eyeroll.
This

I totally second your post

i hope when they move on, they just forget teddy existence or something

Otherwise

It'll be my second disappointment

I partially agree. We don't know who other producers would be, because they could be worse than Teddy as well. I just want to see other producers included, and THE ALBUM really did that, but it seems that TEDDY will dominate no matter who else works on the track.

I actually did like Lovesick Girls quite a lot, it's nothing new but done pretty well. I like the execution, the production on the track and the girls' voices.
Crazy Over You is also pretty good imo, def my fav B-side though it's too short.

After that, Bet You Wanna was okay but Cardi had the highlights/best part in that song for sure.

Not really a fan of the other 5 tracks, esp HYLT and Ice Cream.

All in all, I'm not a huge fan of The Album, but Lovesick Girls will surely find a place on my playlist and I've replayed it quite a few times already.

Idk maybe look at the blackpink mv thread? A lot of people are saying that lovesickgirls is one of the few bp songs that they’ve liked in a while. Also on Akp the same thing is happening over there. Even a lot of blinks who haven’t liked bps music direction really enjoyed the album. The concept for LSG is something they haven’t done before. While yes it’s not the most innovative comeback, why does it have to be? Ariana grandes music isn’t exactly innovative or brand new but she makes really good music. Not everything bp does have to be revolutionary for it to be good. In their own way bp have been the most experimental in this entire era with three comebacks in a row, all of them being very different from one an another. You guys complain about teddy recycling their music but the moment he stops doing that they’re not innovative and it’s not good? it just seems that no matter what bp does, there’s always gonna be a way to criticize them for simply making music that people enjoy.

I agree that Lovesick Girls is good, but like I said, to me it gives a deja vu to Icona Pop and Charli XCX, and as such it's already seen. This is where we disagree because BLACKPINK, given the rare amount of releases, SHOULD be revolutionary every time. A year should be more than enough to prepare something out of the box, fresh, something that will set a new standard. This is the same issue I had with BTS. They also played safe with Dynamite and knew it would be an instant hit because it sounds like a song of Bruno Mars' shelf. When you say that BLACKPINK was the most experimental with the last three comebacks, I really don't understand what you mean by that. Every song is different than the other, yes, it's not like they pulled a MOMOLAND and released 3 exact same songs, but the flavour is there. Also, when did TEDDY stop with recycling their music, because I will be extremely happy when that happens. I have no reason to hate BLACKPINK, I don't hate them. The managerial aspect of the group made a few crucial mistakes and unless a musical rebrand happens (in a way that they keep playing safe with the formula) I don't see how I will go back to being invested in them. There will always be a way to criticize anyone who does anything, I agree. But I am not criticizing out of spite or to raise my own fave, heck I don't even have a fave! My critique goes towards YG who blatantly treats them as business. Yes, we are all well aware, every group is business, but other companies are good at making us believe they care about music.

Actually sorry, I wont listen to the other tracks at all.

Wont bother with Rose's solo too.

BLACKPINK (as a YG project, not as Jennie, Jisoo, Rose and Lisa themselves) once again proved that they are unable to bring new stuff to the table, can get out with doing the bare minimum and the fans will eat it like it's the last portion of kimchi. It is really sad when you think about it. First of all, I know people are tired of this but I have to mention it. If you release an album, I would expect it to have more than 6 new songs. LOONA is about to drop an EP with 8 tracks (granted, one is intro and one is an English version, but still, it has 8 entries, it's an EP) and let's call things as they are, this is not THE ALBUM, this is THE EP (or THE MINI-ALBUM if you will). Second, if I hear that the name of the album is THE ALBUM, that gives me impression that THE ALBUM will move boundaries, cross space and time, define a new generation. Except, it didn't. It was yet another way to successfully build hype, as in, here you guys go you asked for it, it's THE ALBUM. And the fans ATE IT faster than ever. One million pre-orders, it's clear that BLINKs are starving and will settle for anything at this point. About THE ALBUM itself, it's nothing revolutionary and like I said, brings absolutely nothing new to the table. If anything, it's the most western thing BLACKPINK has ever done, and we know TEDDY jerks off to the western trends. However, he won't give up on his formula, even if other people are working with him. There's just an overwhelming amount of Teddyesque songs. Common baseline that runs throughout the entire song, Jennie opening, Rose and Jisoo alternating before the chorus, chorus with a single line +follow-up line, Lisa rapping, bridge with a unique musical motive, end chorus, done. We got enough of TEDDY formula to stay offended for the next 3 generations of K-pop. The fact that the fans are most excited about Jisoo getting to say "BLACKPINK in your area" tells you enough for how little people will settle and lose their heads.

Nothing to comment about How You Like That and Ice Cream because they are clearly there so this can be called an album. If you missed it, I still despise Ice Cream and How You Like That is the second best song on the album.

Pretty Savage was a decent attempt to make BLACKPINK look tough. The lyrics absolutely do not fit the girls, and it's painting this image of girls who will crush your skull, whereas they are soft mochis. "We're some bitches you can't manage"? Girl, you are literally managed by YG Entertainment, and more extensively, TEDDY. The drop is the best thing about the song, I love when Jennie squeaks for some reason, it fits her. Pretty Savage is a great song to dance to, but it feels very insincere, and no girl other than Lisa can convince me that they are THAT BITCH. I am glad Rose got her own bridge for once, the guitar flawlessly follows her voice and that type of background music is something her solo should be based on.

When Bet You Wanna started, I felt we went out of K-Pop zone, and I was right. This is okay, but ruins the cohesiveness of the album. Cardi does save the song, even though she is a feature. The Ariana Grandesque pre-chorus is something BLACKPINK simply cannot do. At least the song has a proper chorus, although I'm sure TEDDY could come up with rhymes better than "something 'bout you's taking me higher, I'm lighting your fire".

Lovesick Girls is, what could be best describe as Charli XCX and Icona Pop crossover hommage. And this would work 10 years ago, when this sound wasn't nurtured as much. So once again, BLACKPINK brings nothing to the table and to make things worse, THIS is the title track. The song that is melodically reminiscent of Don't Know What To Do, one of their B-sides. One thing I do love about this, it's perfect for Jisoo's vocal range. Maybe that's why she actually starts before Rose this time. The chorus is the best part of the song, all the girls get to song and there are finally words in a title track chorus. Well, half of it, because the other half is repeating a single phrase. But hey, it's progress.

Crazy Over You sends back in time in a good way. The 90s mixed with some sort of flute (I guess it's offensive now to say oriental, so let's skip that) works wonderfully and finally the song has multiple melodies. The chorus really takes you to a different place and that's not what I expected to happen. Unfortunately, the vocals can get somewhat annoying after a few listens with all of the "nagging in the singing" so I don't see myself listening to this repeatedly.

Take Ice Cream's baseline, add a bit of flare to it, make it RnB and get Love To Hate Me. It's a good filler track, that much can be said.

Undoubtedly the best track of the album was saved for last. This is the closest to K-Pop other than How You Like That, not because it's majorly in Korean, language plays no role. K-Pop songs always send a strong message and this song is sending a great one. The lyrics are gorgeous, powerful and leave a huge print on the listener. The simple instrumental really helps the entire thing to be delivered more effectively. Also, it brings more of vulnerable BLACKPINK which I love. STAY and Hope Not are some of my favourite K-Pop songs ever.

I have no doubt THE ALBUM will be a commercial success. Fans nowadays don't really ask for much as long as there is material released. In the end, music no longer matters, what matters is to break that BTS's record in number of views, to appear on charts at #1 then be forgotten until your next release. BLACKPINK is a successful business but the fact that girls individually are a better product to sell than the group itself is sad. YG is definitely on the decline, but fortunately whenever things get rough or a scandal threatens to throw them down, thank God we can expect a BLACKPINK comeback. As for me, I'm done. You Never Know is the only song I'll put on my playlist, and I won't try to find the good in other songs because YG is so blatant about showing that BLACKPINK is just business.
" Pretty Savage was a decent attempt to make BLACKPINK look tough. The lyrics absolutely do not fit the girls, and it's painting this image of girls who will crush your skull, whereas they are soft mochis. "We're some bitches you can't manage"? You got the idea.
That, basically.

You saw it as I saw with this song.

I respect your opinion and I like the fact you are honest about it.
I was a bit gutted with 6 new songs too. I was anticipating at least 10 or 8 not a small 6.

They are just a business and they put that first clearly.
I will still be a fan. The fandom within me is too strong to say no to them really.

And I was body shamed for being skinny too. It's so annoying when people think you should eat more all the time.
Really shows how nasty and stereotyped the world is to the ideal body type sigh...

Very true. I mean there’s other producers that work frequently with a group/company in particular, but I feel with YG they’re so attached to Teddy he might as well be running the company himself.

R Tee will probably take over when teddy resigns but he has been under teddy teachings that i worry nothing will change.

Notthatmarko, I do think you've become an old man b4 yr time, in a way. Wat do you think of the gen 4-ish music like Everglow, Itzy n others. Im sure you hv varied taste n ur appreciation of kpop is more advanced than mine.

But when it comes to blackpink, maybe ur expectations/tastes hv calcified. It happens. I dont rmbr wat ur opinions r on Rv psycho, zimzalabim n umpah umpah were, or RvIS monster or naughty.

Maybe only Led Zeppelin n Robert Plant constantly challenged themselves with new innovations n styles of music (idk, im only going by wat iv read).

My opinion is if Blackpink were a western band like the beatles n their successors, they might be expected to come up with albums as brilliant as Sgt peppers lonlely hearts band or sth similar.

But i liken them more to spice girls or one direction, watever expectations u hv of progression from previous releases is fair but reliant on differences of thought.

YGE n BP/producers obviously think this is the right direction for the group.

Whether i think ur right or YGE/BP r right is irrelevant since i dont subscribmbe to the same premise as you, i only care that they're happy n create work they r relatively satisfied (within the constraints of reality) to release to the public.

Whether in l8r yrs, they repudiate their current or past work, i only judge by wat i experience in the moment-im not judging (mostly) by how much better things could be if they changed this or that to suit my expectations/tastes.

Nth wrong with ur saying ur opinion, just tat the ppl who like bp r saying they disagree (idk for wat reasons), i can only explain my own opinions n reasons i disagree. (Edit b4 posting: i read p2 b4 p1, so caveat: i reserve the right to change my mind on the album if after listening some more i find i agree with ur writings on p1. Until then i stand by the following which is unedited [except 4 typos] from wat i wrote b4 reading p1.)

I hope this wall of text clarifies my opinions of why UR WRONG!!!! :shamesica: :jisoosmh: IM ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ABT THIS!!!! Stream lovesick girls n pretty savage! (Agree to disagree? Truce?)

(Final edit b4 posting,: here goes, hope this doesnt blow up in my face)

It might very well be that I am old. But given that I really like what K-Pop has been throwing at me this year, I don't think it's the age of mine that is at an issue here. As for 4th gen releases, everyone else you mentioned is really prone to stay K-Pop and don't really care about westernizing themselves. LA DI DA wipes the floor with the entire THE ALBUM combined. ITZY has found their signature sound and I love it. Red Velvet is either a hit or miss, but I like all of their songs except Umpah Umpah and RBB. Seulgi and Irene's mini-album is a masterpiece. Monster especially. Again, it's not the 4th gen that's issue here.

That's the thing, I don't think the members are happy. If we remember all the sketchy interviews, some of the members are not in a happy place. Fans have every right to praise the song and the album, who am I to tell them not to. This is just my personal opinion and it should be treated as such.

Fair enuf, i retract the accusation of ur being old b4 ur time. It was a mistaken attempt to compare our relative ages n how im more open to younger, newer music than you. I apologise, it was wrong. Im older than u by a few yrs n my crack at u was trying to seem smart. Reading ur older, earlier posts on KS gave me an impression of u as a young snarky smartass. Maybe i was wrong, maybe being KS staff has made some difference in you. I cant tell 4 sure since i dont know you irl n hardly interact with u.

Way u wrote abt in answer to my questions convinces me tat u hv considered this in depth, but i believe nobody can be sure abt their own inherent prejudices/biases (in the literal, not kpop sense). So im not sure if ur personal subjectivity compromises wat u wrote abt BlackPink's The Album.

I can acknowledge n admit the faults in The Album, its songs, processes n everything you touched on. Nevertheless, i stand by my words - the final productvis sth everyone involved in is satisfied to put out. (Within constraints of reality.)

I also question if you would objectively rate Everglow's future releases the same way you rate BlackPink's The Album, or not. Maybe bcos you take into account YGE's hype of BP, their short path to fame n popularity, the innovativeness in their earlier releases compared to Everglow's only slighter more than 1 yr in existance as an actual gg. Im just saying you yoirself by your own words judge BlackPink's The Album to a standard i dont. Fair enuf itscur opinion.

I just dont think reality is reflected in ur admitted criteria for judgement. Im kinda sliding scale of judgement , in a sense: how ambitious were all those involved in the process, rather than wat they achieved b4 n did it surpass it creatively.

Since tats a fundamental difference, ill let it end here-unless u hv a last word u wanna add. (Even where i strongly disagree, ill only say here tat i very strongly disagree with lots of wat u wrote.)

I respect u more than ever, n if i hadnt engaged u in this thread, my impression of u as a snarky young smartass based on my reading of ur earlier, older posts would hv been reinforced.

Stay ur true self, marko. Theres few authentic spirits like you left in this world remaining. I hope i hvnt lost ur respect (if u had any strong opinion of me in the 1st place) with my ill-considered parts of my posts (or the whole post) in this thread.

Thank u for ur consideration n thoughtful response. (Again hope i dont end up with egg on ny face with this post. I dint beta read it to be cohesive argument or such. Just gonna let it stand.[edit: its been a long 24hr period n i wanted to post acreply while its fresh in my mind.

In 2020 we're still saying Blackpinks success is due to a lack of music and blinks don't care about music
