So, the other day, I met and chatted briefly with the lady in front of me at Chipotle, and then I introduced myself and she reciprocated by introducing herself. And then, after we'd gotten our orders and paid, I asked if she would like my number for texting. She was like, "Not today, but it was very nice to meet you." I just wanted to be her friend, and that's what she said. Did I do something wrong?

Nah, that doesn't make you an asshole. It sounds like you were being nice, but she does have the right to reject you. Some people just wouldn't give out their phone numbers that quickly - especially to strangers.

I agree that you’re not an asshole, the rejection could be for a variety of reasons. Maybe she doesn’t like texting new people much, maybe to her it’s a safety thing, and so on. You’re only an asshole if you try to push her when she clearly says no, which I’m guessing you didn’t do.

My experience was a bit similar

but 'suddenly' she doesn't have her phone and cannot remember her email.
