Isn't it a magical moment when you discover new music? Not only a new band, but a whole sound world that you rarely or even never visited before. Enjoy those moments. They are fragile, volatile like the scent of the last blooming summer flowers when the first autumn winds already touches your nose. Listeners that are limited to one musical genre might experience those magical moments not that often - if you want to fall down a rabbit hole, you need to leave well-trodden paths.
I've experienced those magical moments in the past a few times. For example, when fate and fortune introduced me to Dreamcatcher. And when I listened to 'The Motive', the first song from Elsiane's third album (of currently five releases) 'Death Of The Artist'.
Elsiane is a Canadian Trip Hop duo, founded in 2000 by singer-songwriter Elsieanne Caplette and drummer Stéphane Sotto. Elsieanne, she emigrated from Lima to Montreal in 1999, visited the Lima Conservatory in Peru for classsical training. Her musical influences are bands and artists like Massive Attack, Portishead, Björk, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel - but Elsiane's mysterious and spherical sound, recorded with the help of quite a few guest musicians, is relatively unique. Having said that, if you like artists like CLANN, Sigur Rós, Fever Ray, Röyksopp, and ID:Earth, you might check out Elsiane too.
What makes their music so special? Caplette’s ethereal and distinctive voice floats over orchestral and ethnic music elements, guided by often powerful percussions. The melody lines are captivating, decorated with many small instrumental details and refined by a flawless organic sound mix. So it's even more astonishing that 'Death Of The Artist' is a self-released album.
There are no weak songs on the album. But 'The Motive', 'Back To The Source', 'Nobody Will Escape', and the title track left me speechless. Play this masterpiece while driving through a full-mooned summer night and it feels like you are ready to drive directly to the stars. When an album can gift you such emotions for 50 minutes, it can't do better.
