about the album
One of the albums I was looking forward to the most this year finally arrived!
Their first album, "Within Each Lies The Other," being one of my favourites of the year 2021, I had high expectations for this new record.
Prior to the album release, we got a few singles revealed: "Felt like Home," "Blossom", "Ultraviolet", "Flip Side," and "Slow Down."
The record mixes electronic elements, synth-rock, and metalcore. While the first half of the album consists mostly of previously released songs, the second half consists of new songs. For the listener, it is better to start with the songs already known, as it feels more familiar to them. The band vocalist, Charlie, shows in this album that she can master both screaming and clean vocals. Not all songs combine both clean vocals and screaming, which I found refreshing.
Now let's talk about the songs!!! That is what you are expecting to read about, right?
1. Ultraviolet
The album starts with Ultraviolet, which is a typical metalcore song. It reminded me of some songs featured on their first record.
I have particularly enjoyed the chorus and the nu-metal breakdown, which both added impact to the song overall.
She starts the song with a sweet and calm voice, sounding as smooth as silk. I really like her clean vocals, especially when she is almost whispering.The chorus is half sung and half screamed, which adds more complexity to the mix.
Rating: 9/10
2. Felt like Home
It was the first single to be released, and this sweet but powerful track shows a softer side that the group has.
Despite some heavier screams towards the end of the song, it remains a slower track overall.
We can even hear some strings! (It was actually the bass that I could hear but anyway)

3. Slow Down
One of the best songs on the album, in my opinion! I found that it has high replayability! I am not biased at all,as you can see.
A typical metalcore song once again — I mean, it reminded me of some songs they previously released.
The mix here with synth-rock worked pretty well. The last minute of the song is infectious; I can't deny that it is my favourite part of that song.
I will rate it a 10/10 :)
4. Saint or Rogue
One of the new songs, I would consider it more a rock song than a metal one. Almost pop-rock at some moments.
Some songs of this record allow us to discover a different side of As Everything Unfolds just like this one.
Rating: 8/10
5. Blossom
One of the first singles to have been revealed! That song is a gorgeous metal song; the lyrics are almost too pronounced.
It undoubtedly added to the impact of the whole work. Charlie shows her once again how impactful and emotional her singing can be.
The part I liked the best was towards the end, when she plays with the volume of her voice.
Rating: 9/10
6. Infrared
This interlude is a perfect transition between the two halves of the album. The first half being more focused on the synth work, while the second is more focused on the guitars.
7. Flip Side
Heaviest song on the record and maybe even of their discography. Despite As Everything Unfolds not really being a metal band, the mix works pretty well actually. My only complaint is that the song is way too short, under 3 minutes long...

8. Twilight
The track starts with a strong guitar sound, then when she sings the instrumental slows down. The chorus mixes clean vocals and screaming in the background. The breakdown adds some texture to the whole. I enjoy particularly the part just after the breakdown, when Charlie puts the volume up and shouts.

9. Rose Bouquets
That song is a guitar/bass and singing focused one. I would recommend it to anyone who prefers clean vocals over screaming. I have to admit that it’s definitely one of my favourites among the new ones. Charlie is proving once again that she can use her vocals in a smoother way without sounding generic or boring.

10. Daylight
A typical metalcore song, at the first verse she sings calmly, but then she goes louder. The chorus is well structured and addicting. I really like how the whole song brings us somewhere else.

11. All I've Ever Known
Indie rock tune, I have found the bass and guitar pleasing to hear. It could have been a song released by a typical indie rock band, however I have still recognised As Everything Unfolds’ touch here. I would recommend this song to anyone who is not really into harsher vocals. One of the most accessible songs of the album for sure.

Overall, the album is consistent and well produced. The mix of genres could have been a mess, but it is well done here. I didn’t find any song that is an album filler. It would need more replays to be more appreciated. As Everything Unfolds show in this album that they are able to remain themselves while experimenting with new genres. Jon Cass, who is responsible for programming and of the synth work, is undoubtedly one of the keys to their unique sound. Despite having lost one of their lead guitarists last year, it didn’t affect the overall quality of Ultraviolet. I am curious to see if the third album will bring more of their own touch, and if this experimentation’s phase will continue further.
