Ioannina is a small town in Greece. With a castle (built in the late Ottoman period), a beautiful lake (Pamvotida), and musical talented villagers...

After my probably worst album review introduction ever you might think "Strange old man that started this thread, what are you talking about?"

Well, Villagers Of Ioannina City (VIC) are a Greece band from the region of Epirus. The signature sound of the five musicians is a blend of Doom Metal, Prog, Psychedelic and Post Rock. And Folk - the band members use traditional melodies from their homeland, but integrate bagpipes, clarinets and even a didgeridoo in their unique sound.

VIC was founded in 2007, the current members are:

Alex Karametis – guitar, vocals
Akis Zois – bass
Aris Giannopoulos – drums
Konstantis Pistiolis – clarinet, kaval, backing vocals
Konstantinos Lazos – bagpipe, winds

'Age Of Aquarius' is VIC's second album (the debut 'Riza' sounds similar, although it's not such refined in my opinion). According to Alex Karametis, the concept of 'Age Of Aquarius' is

A journey with lots of parallelisms and meanings. A journey from night to day and from darkness to the light. A circle from birth to death and resurrection. From our mortal presence in this world to consciousness, mental harmony, and union with the cosmic soul.

'Dance Of Night', 'Father Sun', ‘Cosmic Soul’, and the catchy 'For The Innocent' are my favorite songs of this pleasingly long album that stays surprisingly interesting and stylistically diverse most of the time. Having said that, the line between 'hypnotic' and 'repetitive' is somewhat blurred in Psychedelic/Stoner Rock. Fans of straight and short songs might not find another favorite album here.
