on the owls that portrayed her.
Hedwig was Harry's pet, a snowy owl. She was a smart and loyal companion. Unfortunately, she died being struck by a Killing Curse very much not even aimed for her.
Several owl played her so as not to exhaust any of the owls. Gizmo, Ook, and Sprout were the three main actor used to play Hedwig and they were all male. Male snow owls are much smaller than females and because Daniel Radcliff was a tiny human at the start of the series, male owls were used to make it easier for children to handle.
Look at how adorable!!
It's known to not be easy working with animals for movies. Even dogs have their set schedules and food requirements people need to abide by. Training the owls for the series took 6 months which was said to be a little longer than the usual 4 months. Ook and Sprout were the main owls that did most of the stunt scenes. Any time you saw an owl carrying a letter, it was most likely those two.
This scene is absolutely beautiful and you can really appreciate the effort the snowy trio put into making this work. They take direction better than most human actors would <.<
Throughout the series, before Hedwig's death, other owls were brought in: Elmo, Oh Oh, Bandit, Swoops, Kasper and the best name WTON short for White Terror of the North. Isn't he just the cutest!!!!!
These owls worked hard and, I feel, accurately portrayed the character of Hedwig.
I will also add, working with all the lovely owls came in handy when Daniel had to work with another species of bird once more for Miracle Workers.
