Army have wanted people to think BTS is a Cinderella story all this time but they came after 2AM. A really popular group.

BTS had 50% Big 3 privilege when they started.

Well if BTS was struggling it certainly shouldn't have been from a lack of success as their sales were mid tier for boy groups of that era even from their debut.

2 Cool 4 Skool sold 24k on the 2013 Gaon Chart while their comeback album O! RUL8,2? saw an increase of 10k selling 34k. Now their next comeback Skool Luv Affair sold 86k but it also had a special edition selling just under 15k so by the end of 2014 BTS had already sold 100k for a comeback.

This is further solidified by their next comeback Dark & Wild which just sold 100k itself by the end of 2014 then followed up by selling 200k and 274k with The Most Beautiful Moment In Your Life albums in 2015.

BTS as well as Gfriend are neither this rags to riches story that they have become known as in the community as they were always doing okay with Gfriends debut Glass Bead selling 681k downloads before Me Gustas Tu came out and sold 1M downloads then Rough would sell 1.9M downloads.

They've both become this fairy tale story in Kpop while both being groups that were never even below mid tier but I don't expect that image of them to change since they're the poster groups for coming out of nowhere and reaching the top which is still true regardless.

I don´t really get this type of "Cinderella stories" in kpop in general. actually becoming a trainee IS expensive. people who are from working class families would never even dream of it. if you are middle class you are struggling, so stories like Suga´s who had to decide whether to spend his money on a bus ticket or save it for a tuition are supposed to sound horrific, but have you ever met an unfinanced uni student? most of us have been there.

but I think it is not their sales that make them "the Cinderella stories" but more the fact that they are a group from a relatively small country and they have made it worldwide. sure, there were groups before, they are not the ones to invent kpop, this has been discussed and debunked, BUT they are the ones who have made it into local radios of countries like mine and like many others. that even now know BTS and Blackpink and that is where a general knowledge of an ordinary radio listener goes. I really do admire them for it and in that way, they do deserve their own "fairy tale".
