Allergys vs sensory issues (2 Viewers)

Why do people take allergy’s seriously but not sensory issues when it comes to food? I was having this conversation and someone I know now says they have a tomato allergy rather than a sensory issue because nobody takes them seriously and just brushes it off by saying “just pick it off”

I don't know. Unless they have ADHD/ADD or Autism they won't understand how hard certain things are-thankfully I don't have a texture issue. I do however have so many issues with noise-one of the reasons I hate noise music.

I feel like people don’t try to understand. You don’t have to have an allergy to know that its bad if someone eats said food. I have a sensory issue with bananas and mushrooms (or anything of that texture) and I’m highly tempted to start saying its an allergy.

The issue is I have an autoimmune disease where I have to be careful with what I eat and people saying they have an allergy when they don't makes it so people are less likely to be careful for people like me...

But people with sensory issues are just supposed to "deal with it"...? Maybe it really is a two-way street where everyone should just be taken seriously no matter what the reason is. How hard is it to respect simple substitutions? (this isn't directed at you, more about people making the food who don't take either seriously)

Yeah, it is. I personally think people legit just need to take people seriously when they say something in regards to food. My BF has ADHD as well and he really can't handle sauces. It's to the point if something sauce-like is on the plate he has a hard time eating anything that was close to it or that touched it. Like he starts to gag.

I really hate this "suck it up" mentality. Both concerns are very valid but are diminished when the person preparing the food doesn't want to understand or be accommodating. Can we all just eat out and get what we want without such worries or making up things to finally be taken seriously?

I don't know. I know being a server is a very stressful job especially when people are jerks to them. But I'd like to think they wouldn't want to be given something they physically cannot eat or digest. So I'd hope they'd have the same curtesy for others especially being in the business of food service.

I wish I had an answer honestly, people just seem to think it’s nothing for some reason. I have an issue with anything with bones in it. I won’t eat it at all, there will be times I’m maybe eating at someone else’s place or maybe my mom just didn’t realize it but I’ll sometimes feel my tooth graze a bone of whatever meat I’m eating and immediately want to throw up. It destroys my appetite. And people will often laugh and just say cut off the bone… I can’t do that either because if I feel the knife or fork make contact with the bone it triggers the same feeling. It’s something that I’m more conscious of now and I’m extra aware of what people put on my plate or the kind of meat I choose to get at someone’s house or something.
