At the time this was passed, the language being “American” instead of English gained popularity particularly among Irish and Jewish people. They basically wanted to stick it to the British by not using the word English.

I think the US should take Japanese or Korean for our official language. Mainly because it'll piss off most of the people my age screaming that people need to speak English.

This was in 1923, so the Irish people were mad about the things the British did to them during the Irish wars for independence a couple years before, and they did a lot of bad stuff. And Jewish people were mad about British policies in Palestine because they felt that the promise of a land for the Jewish people was never going to happen based off how the process was going. Those two groups felt that rejecting English in favor of American would be a sort of protest against those things
