we call ourselves quebecois bc we mostly live in the province of quebec but that's just too hard to say in english 💀 we do speak french tho if that was the question, we're rlly different from the rest of canada

That's really nice. My city is the only city in the whole country that was founded by french, but we doesn't speak french, cause despite everything we ended up colonized by Portugal and french only stayed here for 3 years stealing from our natives before they were kicked out

really? that's super interesting to have so many cultures that mingled together to found the city even though the influence has not stayed long

Here in Brazil we are very mixed race, as a consequence of so many europeans migrating to steal our stuff, bringing africans to turn them into slaves along with our natives

french is actually one of the 2 official languages in canada. from my experience, the majority of ppl outside quebec don't actually speak french. but pretty much all grocery items have a french version on the other side of the label (unless it's an imported item), bigger websites have a french version of the site, etc.

quebec specifically is very serious about keeping french as their first language that there are laws in place to promote it as their main language (ex: everything to be written in french first, sometimes things aren't written in english at all). at least from what i've heard, i'm not too familiar with the laws. it's a bit of a struggle for me to eat out there sometimes bc things aren't always written in english.
