i was wondering if this looks good for my paper
one thing i was wondering if i should add was the thing with kristipasta and oli london but i felt it'd make it too long
Two of the most commonly seen misappropriations are categorized as Weeaboos and Koreaboos. Weeaboos are people who are so obsessed with the Japanese culture and language that they want to be Japanese. This often consists of these people “learning” Japanese through phrases from anime which is most often not how Japanese people normally speak or live. Koreaboos have the same concept as Weeaboos, except instead of Japan, it’s South Korea. Koreaboos originated around the time that Kpop became a global sensation in 2019. They most often are “learning” Korean from Kpop songs which isn’t how you’d learn proper grammar. They will also fake being Korean or even try becoming Korean and using specific words like “Oppa” (brother) or “Saranghae” (I love you) in the wrong context which is often offensive to people of Korean culture. The most famous of the Koreaboos is Oli London.
Koreaboos are often seen as “cringe” or “disrespectful” towards Korean culture. The most famous of these people is Oli London. London was first seen on the show “Dr. Phil” for wanting to look Korean and wanting to turn himself into the Kpop boy group member Jimin of BTS. He spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on plastic surgery that ranged from getting a smaller nose to making his eyes “look Korean”. After his appearance on the show, he began posting videos of himself on various social media platforms, most commonly TikTok, and through which he gained a massive following. Viewers began criticizing him on his disrespectful and delusional behavior. He continued to post more and more videos including one which gained a ton of attention. In this video, he explains that he bought a cardboard cutout of the BTS member, Jimin, and was planning on marrying it. A few months later, he posted a video of his wedding with the cardboard cutout. After the release of the wedding video, viewers were really ticked off. When the cardboard cutout fiasco ended, he began identifying as other KPOP Idols. Some of which included Lisa and Rosé from Blackpink and Hyunjin from Stray Kids. He went on with this for around 2 years before he apologized to BTS’s Jimin and others and stated that he was “detransitioning” back to his original self.

Oftentimes cultural appropriation is used to refer to one of a culture using a part of another's culture to contribute to their own while being respectful towards the people of that culture. Cultural misappropriation refers to one using a part of another culture and using it in a way that is harmful, offensive, or hurtful to that culture. Cultural appropriation needs to be more normalized rather than cultural misappropriation.
